00:00:29 --> 00:00:34 to Rome and Madrid last month of May. When I
00:00:34 --> 00:00:36 planned the trip to Rome and Madrid, I was hoping
00:00:36 --> 00:00:40 to come back with a few hours of footage, maybe
00:00:40 --> 00:00:42 try to upload a YouTube video for you guys, but
00:00:42 --> 00:00:44 instead I came home with something much better.
00:00:45 --> 00:00:48 I came back with one friend less and a carry
00:00:48 --> 00:00:51 -on full of movies and memories and a completely
00:00:51 --> 00:00:54 different perspective on collecting physical
00:00:54 --> 00:00:56 media abroad. This is not going to be so much
00:00:56 --> 00:00:58 of a travel guide. This is going to be more of
00:00:58 --> 00:01:01 a comparison of Rome and Madrid, not as tourists,
00:01:02 --> 00:01:04 but as movie fans. Originally, when I try to
00:01:04 --> 00:01:08 plan a trip to a new city, whether it's a city
00:01:08 --> 00:01:12 that I've been to before or not, this I'm very
00:01:12 --> 00:01:15 familiar with Madrid. Rome, this is my second
00:01:15 --> 00:01:19 time. My first time I was able to plan out some
00:01:19 --> 00:01:22 of the movies, movie stores that I wanted to
00:01:22 --> 00:01:26 visit. At least in Rome, the two that I kept
00:01:26 --> 00:01:30 visiting over and over the last trip was Hollywood.
00:01:31 --> 00:01:34 It's a small independent store. It's completely
00:01:34 --> 00:01:40 packed wall -to -wall with DVDs, Blu -rays. they're
00:01:40 --> 00:01:43 not big on 4k at least in that one they have
00:01:43 --> 00:01:47 perhaps five to six titles at least this time
00:01:47 --> 00:01:50 around i did see that they had a wall behind
00:01:50 --> 00:01:53 the cash register that had a few titles that
00:01:53 --> 00:01:56 were in 4k uh the one that i keep seeing over
00:01:56 --> 00:01:58 and over is uh perfect days which great movie
00:01:58 --> 00:02:01 i don't think i need another edition of it for
00:02:01 --> 00:02:05 now however in madrid i know there's uh tons
00:02:05 --> 00:02:08 more of physical media stores Like at least in
00:02:08 --> 00:02:12 Madrid, I know of two ciggies. There's FNAC that
00:02:12 --> 00:02:16 finally reopened this year. There's also a few
00:02:16 --> 00:02:20 other bookstores that tend to have DVDs or Blu
00:02:20 --> 00:02:25 -rays as well. I found a SEX CEX in Madrid, pretty
00:02:25 --> 00:02:29 big. It had a great selection of physical media
00:02:29 --> 00:02:32 as well. If you follow me on Instagram, add the

00:02:36 --> 00:02:39 you're gonna be seeing those pictures of those
00:02:39 --> 00:02:41 set stores. I do tend to research some of these
00:02:41 --> 00:02:44 stores beforehand just in case it's one that
00:02:44 --> 00:02:47 just holds a few titles that is not a massive
00:02:47 --> 00:02:51 catalog of movies available. I just, you know,
00:02:51 --> 00:02:54 I don't have to waste my time going. If I know
00:02:54 --> 00:02:57 it's a more, you know, smaller selection, I tend
00:02:57 --> 00:03:00 to leave it for last. But I try to focus more
00:03:00 --> 00:03:04 on bigger stores I do tend to research these
00:03:04 --> 00:03:07 stores beforehand just to see if they're worth
00:03:07 --> 00:03:10 adding to my itinerary. Some of them don't really
00:03:10 --> 00:03:15 hold a large collection of physical media, so
00:03:15 --> 00:03:18 they're more of an afterthought or if passing
00:03:18 --> 00:03:21 by, maybe go in and check it out. Usually what
00:03:21 --> 00:03:26 I do expect to find is more local titles, films
00:03:26 --> 00:03:30 that haven't made it to the U .S. I don't expect
00:03:30 --> 00:03:33 to find boutique labels. Honestly, I don't think
00:03:33 --> 00:03:37 I've seen a criterion in Madrid nor Rome. Usually
00:03:37 --> 00:03:40 my expectations when visiting a different country
00:03:40 --> 00:03:44 when it comes to physical media are not necessarily
00:03:44 --> 00:03:48 high. I do tend to look for something different,
00:03:48 --> 00:03:50 even if it's a special edition or different cover
00:03:50 --> 00:03:53 from something that I already own or like I said,
00:03:54 --> 00:03:56 something that is more local. That's usually
00:03:56 --> 00:03:59 where my focus is. But before I even bought my
00:03:59 --> 00:04:01 first Blu -ray during this trip, I wanted to
00:04:01 --> 00:04:06 see what going to the movies in a different country
00:04:06 --> 00:04:09 actually felt like. My trip started in Rome,
00:04:09 --> 00:04:13 the city of Roman Holiday, the city of Fellini,
00:04:14 --> 00:04:20 the city of Argento, the city of Giallo and some
00:04:20 --> 00:04:25 crappy horror films. that we know and love. But
00:04:25 --> 00:04:27 given that I'm very familiar with movie theaters
00:04:27 --> 00:04:30 in Madrid, I wanted to go through the experience
00:04:30 --> 00:04:34 of going to a movie theater in Rome. Now, there
00:04:34 --> 00:04:36 is a small movie theater close to where I was
00:04:36 --> 00:04:39 staying. Super adorable movie theater. A lot
00:04:39 --> 00:04:43 of the films that came out of Cannes Film Festival
00:04:43 --> 00:04:46 made their way there pretty fast. As a matter
00:04:46 --> 00:04:48 of fact, the reason I went is because they were
00:04:48 --> 00:04:53 playing the new Pedro Amadova film, Bitter Christmas.
00:04:54 --> 00:04:58 Not a great film, to be honest, but it was a
00:04:58 --> 00:05:02 great movie theater experience. The crowd, the
00:05:02 --> 00:05:05 very little crowd that was sharing the theater
00:05:05 --> 00:05:10 with me was very, very invested in the movie.
00:05:11 --> 00:05:14 So I visited the Farnese movie theater, which
00:05:14 --> 00:05:18 is located in Campo di Fiore in Rome. It's a
00:05:18 --> 00:05:21 very art house cinema. It actually does call
00:05:21 --> 00:05:26 itself cinema art house. They actually do sell
00:05:26 --> 00:05:29 films there too. They actually hold a pretty
00:05:29 --> 00:05:33 big selection of physical media within the theater.
00:05:34 --> 00:05:38 It's a little hard to purchase films because
00:05:38 --> 00:05:41 they don't know, at least the guy in the front
00:05:41 --> 00:05:44 desk. didn't know the prices for the titles.
00:05:45 --> 00:05:48 So every time I wanted to know the price of one
00:05:48 --> 00:05:52 of the movies, he needed to go back, check with
00:05:52 --> 00:05:55 the other guy. Kind of gave me more of an estimated
00:05:55 --> 00:05:59 price. I was able to pick up at least an edition
00:05:59 --> 00:06:04 of Hairspray, the musical on DVD just to replace
00:06:04 --> 00:06:07 mine that has a disc rot. There was a lot more
00:06:07 --> 00:06:10 titles there that I did want to purchase, but
00:06:10 --> 00:06:15 it was a little It was a little troublesome trying
00:06:15 --> 00:06:18 to get the guy to figure out the pricing. So
00:06:18 --> 00:06:22 I kind of gave up on that. And then in the back
00:06:22 --> 00:06:24 section where they have the concession stand,
00:06:24 --> 00:06:28 they actually had even more titles. I was trying
00:06:28 --> 00:06:30 to take a peek from a distance because I didn't
00:06:30 --> 00:06:32 know if I was allowed to go behind the counter.
00:06:32 --> 00:06:37 I don't believe so, but I did want to ask the
00:06:37 --> 00:06:40 guy also for a few titles. see the pricing, I
00:06:40 --> 00:06:44 was able to catch the Bitter Christmas film.
00:06:45 --> 00:06:48 I posted a picture of the screening room on Reddit
00:06:48 --> 00:06:52 and a lot of redditors, I believe they're called,
00:06:53 --> 00:06:57 were criticizing the size of the screen. Clearly
00:06:57 --> 00:07:02 these people have never left AMC or any major
00:07:02 --> 00:07:07 theater chain here in the US, but not just outside
00:07:07 --> 00:07:11 of the US, but also in Brooklyn, you will find
00:07:11 --> 00:07:15 theater screen sizes this big. Now, obviously
00:07:15 --> 00:07:18 in the picture, it does look smaller, but in
00:07:18 --> 00:07:21 real life, the object is larger than it appears.
00:07:21 --> 00:07:24 It's actually a pretty wide screen, but it did
00:07:24 --> 00:07:27 get a lot of criticisms for being too small.
00:07:28 --> 00:07:31 I totally understand. If you wanna see a film,
00:07:31 --> 00:07:34 you wanna see a film in the biggest screen possible.
00:07:35 --> 00:07:38 However, these are independent cinemas. This
00:07:38 --> 00:07:41 is not a film that needs to be seen on IMAX.
00:07:42 --> 00:07:46 I enjoyed it. The sound was good. And it's not
00:07:46 --> 00:07:50 the first time that I go see a film in a small
00:07:50 --> 00:07:54 screen cinema. The Garden Cinema in London is
00:07:54 --> 00:07:59 a beautiful theater. It's very elegant. It has
00:07:59 --> 00:08:01 a beautiful lounge. But then when you go into
00:08:01 --> 00:08:06 the screening room, The screen is not that big.
00:08:06 --> 00:08:11 I think it's about maybe 10 feet, at most 12.
00:08:12 --> 00:08:14 So it's not a large screening room. However,
00:08:15 --> 00:08:19 the experience of going to see a film that I
00:08:19 --> 00:08:23 like in that theater while I'm on vacation is
00:08:23 --> 00:08:26 part of creating memories. It's not necessarily
00:08:26 --> 00:08:31 to go criticize the screen. I saw weapons in
00:08:31 --> 00:08:35 one of the biggest IMAX screens in UK. I hated
00:08:35 --> 00:08:38 the experience. Not because the screen was big,
00:08:38 --> 00:08:41 but because I didn't really love the movie. So
00:08:41 --> 00:08:45 it's not about the screen size. It's not about
00:08:45 --> 00:08:49 the size really. Sometimes, you know, it's how
00:08:49 --> 00:08:53 you use it. The ticket pricing is obviously you
00:08:53 --> 00:08:57 have to compare how much we make over here in
00:08:57 --> 00:09:00 the US. Compared to some of these other countries
00:09:00 --> 00:09:03 you got to take in consideration the pricing
00:09:03 --> 00:09:09 versus what people actually do get paid and The
00:09:09 --> 00:09:13 price I believe it was about 8 euros which converts
00:09:13 --> 00:09:17 easily to about 10 US dollars Not bad again not
00:09:17 --> 00:09:20 bad for a film that literally came out the week
00:09:20 --> 00:09:23 I arrived and it's a film that still hasn't made
00:09:23 --> 00:09:27 its way to the US one thing I did notice was
00:09:27 --> 00:09:30 when I was trying to check out the movies at
00:09:30 --> 00:09:33 the concession stand. The DVDs and Blu -rays
00:09:33 --> 00:09:36 they had behind the concession stand was that
00:09:36 --> 00:09:39 there was no popcorn. There was, I believe there
00:09:39 --> 00:09:43 was just some water, some wine and some bagged
00:09:43 --> 00:09:48 snacks. I didn't even care enough to order anything.
00:09:48 --> 00:09:53 I was just there for the movie, really. So last
00:09:53 --> 00:09:55 time I went to Rome, I saw the movie theater.
00:09:55 --> 00:09:58 I was staying right down the street from it.
00:09:58 --> 00:10:00 but I didn't get to visit the movie theater.
00:10:01 --> 00:10:04 This time I was able to take a look inside, and
00:10:04 --> 00:10:07 they do host a lot of events. A lot of events
00:10:07 --> 00:10:11 that for cinema lovers, it'd be a great movie
00:10:11 --> 00:10:14 theater to live next to, to be honest. I can
00:10:14 --> 00:10:19 only probably compare it to Nighthawk here in
00:10:19 --> 00:10:23 Brooklyn, but other than that, it's a very small,
00:10:23 --> 00:10:27 very independent, it's extremely clean. it's
00:10:27 --> 00:10:32 a great cinema it is lovely again if you follow
00:10:32 --> 00:10:34 me on instagram i did post some of the pictures
00:10:34 --> 00:10:37 of the movie theater there if you're in that
00:10:37 --> 00:10:39 movie theater is because you're going to see
00:10:39 --> 00:10:44 a film that is not anywhere else so they're very
00:10:44 --> 00:10:48 respectful at least the audience that was in
00:10:48 --> 00:10:52 my in my screening was a little older they were
00:10:52 --> 00:10:56 very invested in the film sadly the film was
00:10:56 --> 00:10:58 not film that you should be that highly invested
00:10:58 --> 00:11:03 in because it was not I'm all over his best But
00:11:03 --> 00:11:06 that's a topic for a whole different conversation.
00:11:06 --> 00:11:10 I did also notice that the trailers Not just
00:11:10 --> 00:11:14 in Rome, but also in Madrid. They're very local
00:11:14 --> 00:11:17 So a lot of the trailers that you get at the
00:11:17 --> 00:11:22 beginning they tend to be very Specific to the
00:11:22 --> 00:11:26 area. They're very very local Some of them focus
00:11:26 --> 00:11:30 either on businesses around the area. And I don't
00:11:30 --> 00:11:35 think I saw more than three trailers for films.
00:11:35 --> 00:11:39 The overall experience was pretty good. I wish
00:11:39 --> 00:11:42 I could have purchased more physical media there
00:11:42 --> 00:11:45 because their selection was pretty good. I loved
00:11:45 --> 00:11:50 how clean it was. I love how invested in the
00:11:50 --> 00:11:54 community. I don't know if they necessarily have
00:11:54 --> 00:11:56 an organization. I was trying to read a little
00:11:56 --> 00:11:59 bit into that, but translating some of the stuff
00:11:59 --> 00:12:01 in Italian, it was taking me a little bit of
00:12:01 --> 00:12:04 time and my film was about to start. And then
00:12:04 --> 00:12:07 on the way out, I already had some plans for
00:12:07 --> 00:12:10 dinner, so I really couldn't stop and explore
00:12:10 --> 00:12:14 the theater more. They do have, and I believe
00:12:14 --> 00:12:18 this is what it was, a small conference room.
00:12:18 --> 00:12:22 And they have like some sort of movie club, which
00:12:22 --> 00:12:24 I was trying to see if there was something going
00:12:24 --> 00:12:27 on during the week that I was there, but sadly
00:12:27 --> 00:12:32 I wasn't able to get that far into reading. There
00:12:32 --> 00:12:34 was actually something funny that did happen
00:12:34 --> 00:12:38 during the movie and I almost forgot. And it's
00:12:38 --> 00:12:40 that when the trailers started, when they were
00:12:40 --> 00:12:43 playing out the local trailers, I just thought
00:12:43 --> 00:12:46 that there was no sound because they're local
00:12:46 --> 00:12:51 commercials. But I guess the people that go there
00:12:51 --> 00:12:54 constantly already know that they're supposed
00:12:54 --> 00:12:57 to be sound So people were just talking amongst
00:12:57 --> 00:12:59 each other and I was able to catch some words
00:12:59 --> 00:13:01 here and there and I was like, oh they're complaining
00:13:01 --> 00:13:04 about the sounds so that means they're supposed
00:13:04 --> 00:13:06 to be sound with this commercial and People were
00:13:06 --> 00:13:08 getting a little bit desperate at that point
00:13:08 --> 00:13:11 because then the trailers for movies started.
00:13:11 --> 00:13:13 That's when I noticed. Oh, yeah, there's no sound
00:13:13 --> 00:13:16 Keep in mind that theater just recently opened
00:13:16 --> 00:13:21 this was the first showing of the day and somebody
00:13:21 --> 00:13:27 got up and called one of the workers and he came
00:13:27 --> 00:13:30 in he walked through the backside he fixed the
00:13:30 --> 00:13:33 audio came back out then people were complaining
00:13:33 --> 00:13:35 because the sound was too low so they had to
00:13:35 --> 00:13:37 bring him back in to raise the volume I wish
00:13:37 --> 00:13:41 the volume would have been a little higher because
00:13:41 --> 00:13:44 some parts of the dialogue I was not able to
00:13:44 --> 00:13:48 hear but It was still pretty clear. Somebody
00:13:48 --> 00:13:51 clearing their throats or coughing, it kind of
00:13:51 --> 00:13:54 cut the sound entirely. So that was probably
00:13:54 --> 00:13:58 the only downside of it. Other than that, it
00:13:58 --> 00:14:01 was, again, it was a great experience. I'm hoping
00:14:01 --> 00:14:06 to go back now that I know that they tend to
00:14:06 --> 00:14:09 grab films right off film festivals. And they
00:14:09 --> 00:14:12 do also hold a film festival of their own with
00:14:12 --> 00:14:16 their own awards. which would be super amazing
00:14:16 --> 00:14:19 to either be there during that time, because
00:14:19 --> 00:14:22 I'm pretty sure the film selection would be amazing.
00:14:23 --> 00:14:26 And they were also holding some classic Roman
00:14:26 --> 00:14:28 films. They actually had a Fellini coming up,
00:14:29 --> 00:14:31 but that was a week after I was already gone.
00:14:33 --> 00:14:35 Now, I can't really compare this movie theater
00:14:35 --> 00:14:39 to the one in Madrid, which is Cine Ideal, Cine
00:14:39 --> 00:14:42 Yelmo. They're a pretty large chain of cinema,
00:14:42 --> 00:14:45 but The one that I usually go to is Cine Ideal
00:14:45 --> 00:14:49 and I love that movie theater mostly because
00:14:49 --> 00:14:51 it was probably the first movie theater that
00:14:51 --> 00:14:56 I went to in Madrid or Spain in general. It's
00:14:56 --> 00:14:59 a great movie theater, but it does get very crowded
00:14:59 --> 00:15:02 with young people. There's a few schools around
00:15:02 --> 00:15:04 the area and it gets super crowded with young
00:15:04 --> 00:15:07 people. And when I tell you the lines for the
00:15:07 --> 00:15:10 concession stands in this movie theater, are
00:15:10 --> 00:15:14 long, I am not fucking kidding. If your movie
00:15:14 --> 00:15:18 is at 6 p .m. or 1800, you better be there by
00:15:18 --> 00:15:22 1400 because the lines are impossible. Great
00:15:22 --> 00:15:25 popcorn. You can even get beers and wine and
00:15:25 --> 00:15:29 whatever you want, but the lines are ridiculous.
00:15:30 --> 00:15:32 The only problem that I have with that movie
00:15:32 --> 00:15:34 theater sometimes when you're trying to buy movies
00:15:34 --> 00:15:37 at the kiosk, It gets you a lot of problems if
00:15:37 --> 00:15:40 you're trying to pay with international cards.
00:15:40 --> 00:15:43 So I just buy my movie tickets online anyway.
00:15:43 --> 00:15:46 This time I was able to catch back rooms, which
00:15:46 --> 00:15:49 it was a pretty good audience to be honest. I
00:15:49 --> 00:15:52 took my friend to see it. Not the friend that
00:15:52 --> 00:15:55 I lost in Rome, but my other friend who joined
00:15:55 --> 00:15:58 me in Madrid. I took him to see back rooms and
00:15:58 --> 00:16:01 the crowd reaction was pretty good. They were
00:16:01 --> 00:16:04 actually quiet this time. because I've been to,
00:16:04 --> 00:16:07 I believe it was during scream five or six that
00:16:07 --> 00:16:11 I saw there. And the audience was a little bit
00:16:11 --> 00:16:15 more chatty. And this one, the crowd was a little
00:16:15 --> 00:16:18 bit more quieter, a little bit more responsive.
00:16:18 --> 00:16:21 So it was a good experience. The sound was pretty
00:16:21 --> 00:16:23 good. What I realized is that when I was watching
00:16:23 --> 00:16:26 back rooms, that was the same screening room
00:16:26 --> 00:16:30 in which I saw a scream. which was pretty amazing
00:16:30 --> 00:16:33 because I don't remember the sound being that
00:16:33 --> 00:16:36 good. But for back rooms, I did notice the sound
00:16:36 --> 00:16:40 being pretty good. The other one that I did catch
00:16:40 --> 00:16:44 in that movie theater was Scary Movie 6. Now
00:16:44 --> 00:16:47 the crowd was laughing. They were enjoying the
00:16:47 --> 00:16:50 film. Obviously, you know, I'm American. I know
00:16:50 --> 00:16:53 some of the jokes before they even hit. So I'm
00:16:53 --> 00:16:55 there laughing like an idiot by myself. And then
00:16:55 --> 00:16:58 when the joke finally hits, then people start
00:16:58 --> 00:17:01 laughing. So I kind of felt like I was the disrespectful
00:17:01 --> 00:17:04 one, but it was also a pretty good experience.
00:17:04 --> 00:17:06 The only thing is, you know, you have people
00:17:06 --> 00:17:10 coming in 40 minutes into the movie to an hour
00:17:10 --> 00:17:13 and 30 minute movie. But I was sitting right
00:17:13 --> 00:17:17 next to the entrance door. So that was probably
00:17:17 --> 00:17:21 the biggest problem that I had. And. Every time
00:17:21 --> 00:17:24 somebody came in, I would just get a full light
00:17:24 --> 00:17:28 from outside. And it's one of those automatic
00:17:28 --> 00:17:30 doors that when you open them, they take forever
00:17:30 --> 00:17:34 to close. So that was the only downside to sitting
00:17:34 --> 00:17:37 all the way in the back where I was, but it was
00:17:37 --> 00:17:39 still a pretty good experience. Now, if I had
00:17:39 --> 00:17:43 to compare which one is a better movie theater,
00:17:43 --> 00:17:46 it is very hard. I was actually thinking about
00:17:46 --> 00:17:50 that and I was... I was like, I don't know how
00:17:50 --> 00:17:54 to evaluate this because I mentioned the theater

00:18:17 --> 00:18:20 that are pretty large. And apparently they have
00:18:20 --> 00:18:23 great sound in that one. I haven't visited those
00:18:23 --> 00:18:28 yet. But if I had to compare which one was better,
00:18:29 --> 00:18:32 I love a small independent movie theater. So
00:18:32 --> 00:18:35 I would have to say that for Ness or for Nessie,
00:18:36 --> 00:18:39 it probably takes the win just because it's more
00:18:39 --> 00:18:45 of a community theater. It does bring in more
00:18:45 --> 00:18:50 titles that are direct from festivals. The one
00:18:50 --> 00:18:53 in Madrid, Bitter Christmas, had not come out
00:18:53 --> 00:18:55 yet. And even though it's a Spanish film that
00:18:55 --> 00:18:59 was recorded in Madrid, it was still not out.
00:18:59 --> 00:19:02 Obviously, Cine Ideal is a little bit more commercial,
00:19:03 --> 00:19:06 but I still checked around the area to see if
00:19:06 --> 00:19:08 there was any other movie theater that was showing
00:19:08 --> 00:19:11 Bitter Christmas. Before I saw it in Rome I said
00:19:11 --> 00:19:13 let me make sure they're not showing it in Madrid
00:19:13 --> 00:19:15 because I might as well just go see it there
00:19:15 --> 00:19:19 and take the chance and see Something that also
00:19:19 --> 00:19:22 was part of the Cannes Film Festival that was
00:19:22 --> 00:19:26 also showing the presentation in both movie theaters.
00:19:26 --> 00:19:29 I would say they're Okay, they're not like I
00:19:29 --> 00:19:33 said, you're not going here for the quality necessarily
00:19:33 --> 00:19:37 of the film. They're more of a Here's a movie
00:19:37 --> 00:19:40 theater. Here's the film That is probably not
00:19:40 --> 00:19:45 their fault, to be honest. But the presentation
00:19:45 --> 00:19:48 was still pretty good. I think the problem that
00:19:48 --> 00:19:51 I have with Sina Ideal, and I noticed that again
00:19:51 --> 00:19:58 with Scary Movie 6, is that the projector is
00:19:58 --> 00:20:02 pretty dark. The lighting in the screen is pretty
00:20:02 --> 00:20:05 dark. And I couldn't really appreciate some of
00:20:05 --> 00:20:08 the darks in the film. Backrooms is so much light.
00:20:09 --> 00:20:12 It's a film that is so well lit that I didn't
00:20:12 --> 00:20:14 have a problem with it. But in Scary Movie, I
00:20:14 --> 00:20:19 can see that the projector, the lighting is perhaps
00:20:19 --> 00:20:25 not the strongest. In For Nessie, the film itself
00:20:25 --> 00:20:27 is very bright. A lot of Brother and Mother White
00:20:27 --> 00:20:32 films are. And the colors were amazing. Like
00:20:32 --> 00:20:34 one thing about a Brother and Mother White film
00:20:34 --> 00:20:38 is always the colors. And in this projector,
00:20:38 --> 00:20:41 at least in this movie theater that I was watching
00:20:41 --> 00:20:46 the film, the colors were very, very bright and
00:20:46 --> 00:20:50 very, very vivid. So comparing that, I think
00:20:50 --> 00:20:52 that when it comes to scene idea, it has to be
00:20:52 --> 00:20:55 the quality of the film or perhaps just the screening
00:20:55 --> 00:20:58 room because some scenes in scary movie were
00:20:58 --> 00:21:01 not that bad. The overall experience in both
00:21:01 --> 00:21:04 of them was pretty good. I feel like the movie
00:21:04 --> 00:21:07 theater is pretty clean. I would say if you're
00:21:07 --> 00:21:10 visiting Madrid, I wish I hope you do if you
00:21:10 --> 00:21:12 haven't. This is a pretty good movie theater
00:21:12 --> 00:21:16 to go to. Somebody asked me on Reddit if they
00:21:16 --> 00:21:19 still had the sex museum. They don't. So I do
00:21:19 --> 00:21:23 apologize for that. I believe that closed. There
00:21:23 --> 00:21:26 is a lot of sex shops. So if I can give you a
00:21:26 --> 00:21:28 recommendation of some, but there is no sex museum
00:21:28 --> 00:21:32 inside Sine Ideal anymore. One thought that I
00:21:32 --> 00:21:35 had while I was thinking about creating this
00:21:35 --> 00:21:40 episode was As someone who loves movies, which
00:21:40 --> 00:21:44 city would I go back to first is pretty hard
00:21:44 --> 00:21:50 to decide because I do love the feeling of collecting
00:21:50 --> 00:21:56 or hunting for physical media in Madrid. But
00:21:56 --> 00:22:00 if you're going for a more cinematic experience,
00:22:00 --> 00:22:03 if you want to feel like you're inside a film,
00:22:04 --> 00:22:10 I definitely recommend Rome just because in Rome
00:22:10 --> 00:22:13 not only do you have these classic films like
00:22:13 --> 00:22:16 Roman Holiday and the Da Vinci Code or the more
00:22:16 --> 00:22:19 recent one Conclave, but you also have some spaces
00:22:19 --> 00:22:26 that kind of unlock a Memory of a film or make
00:22:26 --> 00:22:30 you feel like you're part of a film. So the whole
00:22:30 --> 00:22:34 atmosphere in Rome It feels like that. It does
00:22:34 --> 00:22:38 feel like you're inside of a film. There's a
00:22:38 --> 00:22:43 bookstore in Rome that is called Altruquando
00:22:43 --> 00:22:48 Liberia e Pub. What I love about that bookstore
00:22:48 --> 00:22:52 is that the upstairs is all books, but when you
00:22:52 --> 00:22:57 go down the stairs, the lower floor is a bar.
00:22:58 --> 00:23:01 It's not wow, it's a bar, covered from wall to
00:23:01 --> 00:23:05 wall with all types of film, not just Italian
00:23:05 --> 00:23:09 films. And it is such a great place to just sit
00:23:09 --> 00:23:14 down and think or talk about Italian cinema and
00:23:14 --> 00:23:18 have a small stage, which I'm assuming they either
00:23:18 --> 00:23:22 do karaoke or live music. They also have a projector.
00:23:22 --> 00:23:26 So I'm assuming they also do screening of films,
00:23:26 --> 00:23:31 but they have a huge poster of blow up. And that
00:23:31 --> 00:23:34 is an amazing film. I actually wish I had that.
00:23:34 --> 00:23:38 poster in my movie room because I just love that
00:23:38 --> 00:23:41 poster but it's a great place to just like sit
00:23:41 --> 00:23:45 down grab a drink and talk about Italian cinema
00:23:45 --> 00:23:49 in a city that is so romanticized however in
00:23:49 --> 00:23:54 Madrid if you're more of a collector then obviously
00:23:54 --> 00:23:58 you do have more options of stores so that is
00:23:58 --> 00:24:01 something that you have to wait if you're going
00:24:01 --> 00:24:04 for more cinematic experience or if you're going
00:24:04 --> 00:24:08 to just buy films throughout the trip. Because
00:24:08 --> 00:24:12 I mean, you could just go to Hollywood, the store
00:24:12 --> 00:24:16 in Rome and spend your money there, which is
00:24:16 --> 00:24:21 great. But overall, the decision of which city
00:24:21 --> 00:24:25 I will go back to as a movie lover, it would
00:24:25 --> 00:24:29 have to be based on what kind of experience I
00:24:29 --> 00:24:32 wanna have. If I wanna have the, I just wanna
00:24:32 --> 00:24:35 buy movies throughout my entire trip, then I
00:24:35 --> 00:24:39 definitely choose Madrid. If it's, I wanna feel
00:24:39 --> 00:24:43 like I'm inside of a movie my entire trip, then
00:24:43 --> 00:24:52 in that case, I choose Rome. Let's talk about
00:24:52 --> 00:24:56 the stores, because we talk about buying physical
00:24:56 --> 00:24:59 media. And I didn't mention some of the stores
00:24:59 --> 00:25:03 that I visited. Now, the most important thing
00:25:03 --> 00:25:08 is which stores are easier to find. Like I mentioned,
00:25:08 --> 00:25:13 Hollywood and Rome is probably the easiest. It
00:25:13 --> 00:25:17 is hidden. So just make sure you're using Google
00:25:17 --> 00:25:20 Maps, trying to get to it. It is hidden between
00:25:20 --> 00:25:23 two streets, two lovely streets on your Campo
00:25:23 --> 00:25:27 di Fiore. I usually go crazier there. than I
00:25:27 --> 00:25:30 do in Profondo Rosso, which is the horror store
00:25:30 --> 00:25:34 that is co -owned by Argento. So it really comes
00:25:34 --> 00:25:37 down into what kind of films are you more into
00:25:37 --> 00:25:40 collecting and what kind of experience you want
00:25:40 --> 00:25:44 to have as a collector. I also posted some pictures
00:25:44 --> 00:25:49 of the museum that is hidden under Profondo Rosso.
00:25:49 --> 00:25:53 I believe it's about five euros to enter. As
00:25:53 --> 00:25:57 a horror fan, you have to try it out. It's not
00:25:57 --> 00:26:00 something wow, but it's more of the experience
00:26:00 --> 00:26:04 of visiting the museum. It just has like some
00:26:04 --> 00:26:10 weird mannequin, you know, looking figures that
00:26:10 --> 00:26:14 are scenes of some Ardento films. The experience
00:26:14 --> 00:26:18 itself is worth the five euros. But Profundo
00:26:18 --> 00:26:21 Rosso does feel, in one side of the store, does
00:26:21 --> 00:26:26 feel very party city. As in they have a lot of
00:26:26 --> 00:26:30 masks for Halloween. They have a lot of books
00:26:30 --> 00:26:32 on horror. They do have a lot of Italian titles,
00:26:32 --> 00:26:36 but you can also find one or two English titles.
00:26:37 --> 00:26:41 I was able to buy at the Profundo Rosso store
00:26:41 --> 00:26:44 the Giallo Argento all about Dario Argento and
00:26:44 --> 00:26:49 his movies book, which I started on my way to
00:26:49 --> 00:26:51 Madrid. the plane and it was a pretty interesting
00:26:51 --> 00:26:55 book I don't know too much about Argento 21 euros
00:26:55 --> 00:26:58 I highly recommend it I'm gonna be posting some
00:26:58 --> 00:27:01 pictures of these on social media so if you're
00:27:01 --> 00:27:03 interested just let me know and I'll let you
00:27:03 --> 00:27:07 know the pricing or where to find it so the experiences
00:27:07 --> 00:27:11 as collectors it's gonna be much different if
00:27:11 --> 00:27:14 you are a horror collector you're not gonna find
00:27:14 --> 00:27:19 a lot of horror at Hollywood but you will find
00:27:20 --> 00:27:24 some more thriller -esque at Profondo Rosso.
00:27:24 --> 00:27:29 The only problem that I have with Profondo Rosso,
00:27:29 --> 00:27:34 the prices are a little bit steep. They were
00:27:34 --> 00:27:38 trying to sell me a copy, and I can't remember
00:27:38 --> 00:27:41 the title right now, but it's a Severin film,
00:27:41 --> 00:27:46 and they wanted almost 90 euros for it, because
00:27:46 --> 00:27:49 it was out of print. but it was out of print
00:27:49 --> 00:27:51 for them because we still had the title here.
00:27:51 --> 00:27:53 I remember the title not being out of print here.
00:27:53 --> 00:27:55 I just can't remember the name of the title,
00:27:55 --> 00:28:00 but I was not going to pay $90 for that. I didn't
00:28:00 --> 00:28:02 want to tell them either that we have that film
00:28:02 --> 00:28:06 in the US still available. I just thought it
00:28:06 --> 00:28:08 would be disrespectful, but I did like having
00:28:08 --> 00:28:12 conversations with them. But what I do love about
00:28:12 --> 00:28:16 both stores is the conversations. that you have
00:28:16 --> 00:28:19 with these people. Like they're very knowledgeable
00:28:19 --> 00:28:23 either at your Profondo Rosso having a horror
00:28:23 --> 00:28:25 conversation or if you're at Hollywood just having
00:28:25 --> 00:28:30 a general film conversation. They're equally
00:28:30 --> 00:28:35 knowledgeable on film. I do love having more
00:28:35 --> 00:28:39 conversations with the lady in Hollywood. She's
00:28:39 --> 00:28:41 very, very knowledgeable in a lot of things,
00:28:42 --> 00:28:45 Italian cinema. and she recommended a lot of
00:28:45 --> 00:28:49 films to me. Now, something I noticed visiting
00:28:49 --> 00:28:53 these stores a few times now is that they're
00:28:53 --> 00:28:56 not that busy. I did visit a few bookstores.
00:28:57 --> 00:28:59 They tend to have a little bit more of a crowd,
00:28:59 --> 00:29:02 but when it came to the movie stores themselves,
00:29:02 --> 00:29:06 I think at Hollywood, I usually see one or two
00:29:06 --> 00:29:09 people out there. I do see a lot of Americans
00:29:09 --> 00:29:13 there, but at Profundo Rosso, I don't think I've
00:29:13 --> 00:29:19 seen anyone besides myself when I go. So I don't
00:29:19 --> 00:29:23 know if it's just the demand itself or just because
00:29:23 --> 00:29:25 everyone else is working and we're the only tourists
00:29:25 --> 00:29:30 there at the time, but they're not busy. And
00:29:30 --> 00:29:33 when you compare that to Madrid, in Madrid, some
00:29:33 --> 00:29:36 of these stores are packed, at least in FNAC,
00:29:37 --> 00:29:41 which is the Best Buy looking department store.
00:29:41 --> 00:29:44 That one tends to get packed. There are physical
00:29:44 --> 00:29:48 media, not just films, but CDs. It does tend
00:29:48 --> 00:29:52 to get packed. And I haven't been able to really
00:29:52 --> 00:29:56 have conversations at Fernac about films. It
00:29:56 --> 00:29:58 just feels like a big department store. And I
00:29:58 --> 00:30:02 don't know how knowledgeable the employees will
00:30:02 --> 00:30:04 be. At least one of the gentlemen that I usually
00:30:04 --> 00:30:07 ask questions to, he does know a lot about films,
00:30:07 --> 00:30:10 but he's not always there. And when it comes
00:30:10 --> 00:30:13 to the crowd, everyone is to each their own.
00:30:13 --> 00:30:16 They're not too conversational. So I don't want
00:30:16 --> 00:30:19 to bother anybody. At least in Rome, it did feel
00:30:19 --> 00:30:22 that if there was someone else in the store,
00:30:22 --> 00:30:25 even if it was just an American person, you're
00:30:25 --> 00:30:28 more inclined to talk to them, which I did. That's
00:30:28 --> 00:30:30 how I found out there were tourists. They're
00:30:30 --> 00:30:34 there because of their love for cinema. And they're
00:30:34 --> 00:30:38 also looking for Italian cinema. which is always
00:30:38 --> 00:30:43 good to have conversations in a movie store because
00:30:43 --> 00:30:46 you might discover something that you did not
00:30:46 --> 00:30:50 know. That is something I noticed that in Madrid,
00:30:50 --> 00:30:53 the physical media stores tend to be more packed
00:30:53 --> 00:30:57 or at least have a crowd than they did in Rome.
00:30:58 --> 00:31:01 It's the same thing with London. In London, you
00:31:01 --> 00:31:06 go to a FOP or Asian V and these stores are packed
00:31:06 --> 00:31:10 or at least have a few people browsing, purchasing.
00:31:11 --> 00:31:14 It's just a weird feeling, you know, to see a
00:31:14 --> 00:31:18 movie store empty. What again surprises me is
00:31:18 --> 00:31:23 that a lot of the focus is on DVD. As I said
00:31:23 --> 00:31:28 before, a lot of European collectors still have
00:31:28 --> 00:31:33 a strong passion or they're more inclined to
00:31:33 --> 00:31:39 buy DVD. and Blu -ray, then 4K. A lot of these
00:31:39 --> 00:31:44 DVDs, they have great sound. I purchased DVDs
00:31:44 --> 00:31:48 that are brand new in Rome and Madrid, and the
00:31:48 --> 00:31:53 sound is amazing, like 5 .1 DTS. And then some
00:31:53 --> 00:31:57 of them are restored from a 4K scan. Last year,
00:31:57 --> 00:32:00 I bought an Italian film that it was transferred
00:32:00 --> 00:32:06 on DVD from a 4K restoration. I don't think e
00:32:06 --> 00:32:08 -criterion does that. I don't know. I haven't
00:32:08 --> 00:32:11 looked. I don't own a lot of criterion DVDs.
00:32:12 --> 00:32:15 And the ones that I do are 2K scan. But when
00:32:15 --> 00:32:18 I saw that, it didn't make sense to me. I thought
00:32:18 --> 00:32:21 it was a Blu -ray at one point, but then I looked
00:32:21 --> 00:32:23 at it again and it said DVD. And I was like,
00:32:23 --> 00:32:30 how is it a DVD has a 4K scan? transfer I don't
00:32:30 --> 00:32:34 know the memory on that disc but it must be a
00:32:34 --> 00:32:38 great like honestly I don't know how they did
00:32:38 --> 00:32:41 it but they did it and that's why a lot of people
00:32:41 --> 00:32:45 in Europe still collect DVDs and DVD is still
00:32:45 --> 00:32:48 king in Europe over here were the ones that are
00:32:48 --> 00:32:50 a little bit more snobby that everything has
00:32:50 --> 00:32:53 to be on 4k and we have to be upgrading every
00:32:53 --> 00:32:57 five minutes and I include myself I'm not attacking
00:32:57 --> 00:33:00 anybody personally. I include myself in that
00:33:00 --> 00:33:04 Thankfully, I have a region free player the LG
00:33:04 --> 00:33:07 I'll I'll link it below because I forgot that
00:33:07 --> 00:33:10 the entire name But it was about 99 dollars on
00:33:10 --> 00:33:13 Amazon the only problem with it. The fan is very
00:33:13 --> 00:33:16 loud So the film is very low You're gonna hear
00:33:16 --> 00:33:19 the fan over the the movie and that kind of does
00:33:19 --> 00:33:23 suck but it's still a good Blu -ray player. I
00:33:23 --> 00:33:27 didn't see any use section So I don't know about
00:33:27 --> 00:33:32 any second hand at least in Rome because you
00:33:32 --> 00:33:37 have CEX over there in Madrid and London. And
00:33:37 --> 00:33:40 those are the only second hands that I know in
00:33:40 --> 00:33:44 those two countries. So I don't know much of
00:33:44 --> 00:33:47 any second hand over there in Rome. So if you're
00:33:47 --> 00:33:50 trying to see if you can hit up some, you know,
00:33:50 --> 00:33:53 thrift shops or something, that I don't know.
00:33:54 --> 00:33:56 But when it comes to boutique labels, like I
00:33:56 --> 00:34:01 mentioned before, I didn't see any in Rome. In
00:34:01 --> 00:34:04 Madrid, I haven't seen any either. I just don't
00:34:04 --> 00:34:08 think these two countries focus too much on boutique
00:34:08 --> 00:34:12 labels. I do know people who collect Criterion
00:34:12 --> 00:34:15 in Madrid, but they usually buy it because they
00:34:15 --> 00:34:18 travel to London a lot. So I don't know where
00:34:18 --> 00:34:21 they get it in Madrid or if they're even available.
00:34:21 --> 00:34:24 if they have any sabran or arrow or anything
00:34:24 --> 00:34:28 like that in these two countries. Also another
00:34:28 --> 00:34:32 thing that I noticed that Madrid is bigger in
00:34:32 --> 00:34:37 than Rome. Madrid has a lot of steel books. I
00:34:37 --> 00:34:39 bought a Caligula last year at the beginning
00:34:39 --> 00:34:42 of this year actually and it was a nice steel
00:34:42 --> 00:34:45 book. It's a DVD but it's a very nice steel book
00:34:45 --> 00:34:48 though. Usually they're more customized. You're
00:34:48 --> 00:34:50 not going to find it in UK. You're not going
00:34:50 --> 00:34:53 to find it here in the States. They have a beautiful
00:34:53 --> 00:34:58 edition in FNAC of Monster Squad. I've been wanting
00:34:58 --> 00:35:00 to buy, but I don't have a reason to, and that
00:35:00 --> 00:35:05 one's on 4K. You do find a lot of 4K in FNAC.

00:35:48 --> 00:35:52 titles at one point and I thought I was over
00:35:52 --> 00:35:57 150 euros and When we went to pay it came down
00:35:57 --> 00:36:01 to like 90 euros and this just because the titles
00:36:01 --> 00:36:05 most of them were either 30 % off and then a
00:36:05 --> 00:36:08 10 % off because they had an extra percentage
00:36:08 --> 00:36:12 off on movies, it was almost a 40%. And I don't
00:36:12 --> 00:36:15 know when these sales happen. This last time
00:36:15 --> 00:36:18 that I was there, there wasn't much of one, but
00:36:18 --> 00:36:20 when they do happen, it's probably the best time
00:36:20 --> 00:36:23 to take advantage and buy everything you want
00:36:23 --> 00:36:27 because you can't beat that price, especially
00:36:27 --> 00:36:30 when it comes to a steel book at almost 40 %
