Spanish Horror, Women in Horror & Neurodivergence | Jenny from the Crypt

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode!

For this Halloween episode of The Physical Cut, I’m joined by Jenny from the Crypt for a conversation about growing up with horror in Spain, discovering Spanish horror cinema, and finding community through a genre that has always made room for the weird and misunderstood.

We talk about women’s perspectives in horror, neurodivergence and the characters who challenge expectations, the difference between mainstream horror and the films that stay with us, and why supporting women in the horror community matters. Jenny also shares some of her favorite Spanish horror discoveries, from [REC] to Who Can Kill a Child? and The Wait, alongside the personal memories that shaped her love of the genre.

Plus, we discuss Halloween favorites, underrated horror gems, the movies that genuinely scare us, and what Scream means to horror fans who grew up outside the United States as we celebrate its 30th anniversary.

In this episode:

  • Growing up with horror in Spain and discovering Spanish horror cinema

00:00:00 --> 00:00:03 Okay, look for the segment called Tea is for
00:00:03 --> 00:00:07 Toilet. Amazing. Amazing. I already have a bad
00:00:07 --> 00:00:09 time in the toilet. I don't need another one.
00:00:10 --> 00:00:13 It's actually a kid who is terrified of going
00:00:13 --> 00:00:58 to the toilet. It is your story, maybe. Welcome
00:00:58 --> 00:01:00 back to The Physical Cut, where films live beyond
00:01:00 --> 00:01:03 the stream. My name is Carlos, and today we have
00:01:03 --> 00:01:06 a special Halloween episode of The Physical Cut.
00:01:06 --> 00:01:09 We're talking horror from a slightly different
00:01:09 --> 00:01:11 perspective. Today I have Jenny from The Crit
00:01:11 --> 00:01:14 who's joining me to talk about growing up with
00:01:14 --> 00:01:16 horror in Spain, discovering American horror,
00:01:17 --> 00:01:19 Spanish horror, building a life around the genre.
00:01:20 --> 00:01:22 and why horror connects with people across borders.
00:01:23 --> 00:01:25 Welcome to the podcast, Jenny. Thank you. Thank
00:01:25 --> 00:01:27 you for the invitation. Well, first of all, I
00:01:27 --> 00:01:29 want to apologize if my English is not the best.
00:01:30 --> 00:01:32 It's a bit rusty, but I'll try my best. I'll
00:01:32 --> 00:01:35 try my best, promise. Ah, there you see my accent
00:01:35 --> 00:01:39 already, so no worries. Jenny, I know you host
00:01:39 --> 00:01:40 a podcast with your sister, so we're going to
00:01:40 --> 00:01:43 talk a little bit about that before we deep dive
00:01:43 --> 00:01:46 into personal questions. But your podcast is
00:01:46 --> 00:01:50 an interesting take. You host the Ronco on Deficit
00:01:50 --> 00:01:54 de Atención, TBA, a horror podcast. Please explain
00:01:54 --> 00:01:58 to me a little bit about the terror with attention
00:01:58 --> 00:02:04 deficit. Well, where do I begin? This idea comes
00:02:04 --> 00:02:08 from both the love I have for the genre, we both
00:02:08 --> 00:02:14 have for the genre, and also from our diagnosis
00:02:14 --> 00:02:20 as ADHD. We both were diagnosed as adults. So
00:02:20 --> 00:02:25 while we were growing up, we had many difficulties
00:02:25 --> 00:02:30 and many aspects we didn't understand. We didn't
00:02:30 --> 00:02:34 understand ourselves. That will be the resume.
00:02:34 --> 00:02:39 And the idea for this podcast is to connect these
00:02:39 --> 00:02:43 two words because I truly believe there is a
00:02:43 --> 00:02:46 lot of... In the same way horror talks... A lot
00:02:46 --> 00:02:50 about minorities, about the queer community,
00:02:50 --> 00:02:55 about all the others. We could just make a group
00:02:55 --> 00:02:59 of horror discussing the otherness. So I think
00:02:59 --> 00:03:05 neurodivergence fits very well that box of otherness
00:03:05 --> 00:03:08 as well. Because we've always been misunderstood.
00:03:08 --> 00:03:13 We've always been the weird, the hysterical.
00:03:14 --> 00:03:18 Dude, that's intense. And I think there are many
00:03:18 --> 00:03:22 movies and characters in the genre that portray
00:03:22 --> 00:03:27 that feeling, right? And I don't know, growing
00:03:27 --> 00:03:32 up is the genre I have felt most identified with.
00:03:32 --> 00:03:36 Yeah, I agree. I feel like that a lot of, like
00:03:36 --> 00:03:38 you said, a lot of people who are just different,
00:03:38 --> 00:03:41 not just necessarily on the spectrum. But a lot
00:03:41 --> 00:03:42 of people who are different, especially like
00:03:42 --> 00:03:46 you said, the queer community, they do find a
00:03:46 --> 00:03:50 home in horror just because, you know, it's the
00:03:50 --> 00:03:52 kookiness, it's the weirdness, it's the campiness
00:03:52 --> 00:03:56 that you usually associate yourself with. I couldn't
00:03:56 --> 00:03:59 put it better. That is our issue. But you also
00:03:59 --> 00:04:01 focus a lot on women horror. And like right now
00:04:01 --> 00:04:03 I can see you have House of Psychotic Women right
00:04:03 --> 00:04:08 behind you. So you do. Why do you love to focus
00:04:08 --> 00:04:13 so much on women horror? Well, because I'm a
00:04:13 --> 00:04:18 woman in horror myself. I mean, I, well, I don't
00:04:18 --> 00:04:22 create, I'm not a director or actress or anything,
00:04:22 --> 00:04:27 but I love horror. And I found myself. A little
00:04:27 --> 00:04:30 bit lonely sometimes in this community because
00:04:30 --> 00:04:34 let's be honest, most of the community is formed
00:04:34 --> 00:04:41 by men. And many times I've seen a little bit
00:04:41 --> 00:04:45 of, I don't know if calling it disrespect or
00:04:45 --> 00:04:49 just people judging this idea, this misconception
00:04:49 --> 00:04:55 that horror is not for women. You can tell me
00:04:55 --> 00:04:58 something is not for me. You can't do that. Because
00:04:58 --> 00:05:00 then you're going to make me more interested
00:05:00 --> 00:05:06 on it. That is, yes. And I don't know. I also
00:05:06 --> 00:05:09 love the idea of contrast of, I don't know, like
00:05:09 --> 00:05:13 projecting an image of oneself, like a woman
00:05:13 --> 00:05:19 as someone sweet and innocent and like very,
00:05:19 --> 00:05:25 how would you say, harmless. Turning dad and
00:05:25 --> 00:05:30 finding out what a really dad person likes, which
00:05:30 --> 00:05:34 is I love watching horror movies, like really
00:05:34 --> 00:05:39 violent movies. I don't know. I have a blast
00:05:39 --> 00:05:43 with many things that a lot of people will consider
00:05:43 --> 00:05:48 gross, disgusting or, I don't know, shocking.
00:05:50 --> 00:05:52 I love the idea of projecting that contrast.
00:05:52 --> 00:05:55 People don't expect it when I say, yeah, my favorite
00:05:55 --> 00:05:58 genre is horror. People look at me in a weird
00:05:58 --> 00:06:03 way. And I like the idea of defined stereotypes
00:06:03 --> 00:06:08 and define that common misconception. And that
00:06:08 --> 00:06:13 is the way I got into digging up, I don't know
00:06:13 --> 00:06:16 how you say it, but yes, getting more interested
00:06:16 --> 00:06:21 in what's the story of women. making horror,
00:06:21 --> 00:06:26 participating in horror? What is the role in
00:06:26 --> 00:06:30 it? And I actually want to recommend a book.
00:06:30 --> 00:06:33 It's A Speed on Your Celluloid, written by Heidi
00:06:33 --> 00:06:37 Honigstadt, who I had the pleasure to meet and
00:06:37 --> 00:06:41 to talk with in Sitges a few years ago. And we've
00:06:41 --> 00:06:45 kept contact. She's amazing, and she has done
00:06:45 --> 00:06:50 amazing research on horror cinema. made by women
00:06:50 --> 00:06:54 like from the very beginning and it's like this
00:06:54 --> 00:06:58 is full of movies for your watch list uh it's
00:06:58 --> 00:07:02 a never -ending a never -ending list of movies
00:07:02 --> 00:07:04 i have to watch even movies that don't exist
00:07:04 --> 00:07:08 that have been destroyed or have been lost so
00:07:08 --> 00:07:11 yeah the more i find out about the role of women
00:07:11 --> 00:07:16 in in horror the more i i want to know and the
00:07:16 --> 00:07:20 more i like it So I don't know if that answers
00:07:20 --> 00:07:22 your question a little bit. What was your first
00:07:22 --> 00:07:24 encounter with horror? Because you said people
00:07:24 --> 00:07:26 don't assume that you love horror. Sometimes,
00:07:26 --> 00:07:29 and you're right, it's like, oh, you might look
00:07:29 --> 00:07:33 like a harmless dandelion. And then all of a
00:07:33 --> 00:07:35 sudden you love hostile. And they're like, what?
00:07:36 --> 00:07:38 You know, what do you mean you like torture porn?
00:07:38 --> 00:07:41 Like, what are you talking about? But I do agree.
00:07:41 --> 00:07:44 There's a stereotype that is like, and you said
00:07:44 --> 00:07:47 it very well too, that. the horror community
00:07:47 --> 00:07:50 even if you go on instagram and i'm gonna be
00:07:50 --> 00:07:52 honest you know most of the people i've had on
00:07:52 --> 00:07:56 the podcast are mad and that's because they get
00:07:56 --> 00:08:00 pushed by algorithms so much easier too than
00:08:00 --> 00:08:02 women because they're posting so much constantly
00:08:02 --> 00:08:05 too a lot of the women that i follow on instagram
00:08:05 --> 00:08:08 sometimes i'm like oh i i forgot i followed her
00:08:08 --> 00:08:12 and you know i try to sometimes share the story
00:08:12 --> 00:08:15 or the post so they keep popping up Because one,
00:08:15 --> 00:08:19 they have a better aesthetic. They post better
00:08:19 --> 00:08:23 pictures. A lot of them do also a big deep dive
00:08:23 --> 00:08:27 into the film. And this also happens on YouTube.
00:08:27 --> 00:08:31 I watched some women in horror collectors and
00:08:31 --> 00:08:34 still the algorithm doesn't show them to me constantly.
00:08:35 --> 00:08:37 And some of them I follow and it still doesn't
00:08:37 --> 00:08:40 show it to me constantly. And they have hundreds
00:08:40 --> 00:08:42 of thousands of views. I'm not saying the algorithm
00:08:42 --> 00:08:44 is biased because at the end of the day, the
00:08:44 --> 00:08:47 algorithm is a computer. But it's just that I
00:08:47 --> 00:08:50 feel like men post so much constantly than women
00:08:50 --> 00:08:55 do. I'm guessing the women have a job. And families
00:08:55 --> 00:08:57 to take care of. And families to take care of.
00:08:57 --> 00:08:59 So not only do they have to watch a horror movie
00:08:59 --> 00:09:04 at 3 o 'clock in the morning, but they do post
00:09:04 --> 00:09:07 content that is more... research, more deep dive,
00:09:08 --> 00:09:12 more expanded and great opinion. Sometimes there's
00:09:12 --> 00:09:15 a backlash to that too. It's like, oh, you know,
00:09:15 --> 00:09:18 she tastes it from a woman's perspective. The
00:09:18 --> 00:09:20 movie was made from a man's perspective. Why
00:09:20 --> 00:09:23 can't an opinion have, you know, be from a woman's
00:09:23 --> 00:09:26 perspective too? So you have that, but then she
00:09:26 --> 00:09:27 goes, but I'm glad because no, that's not what
00:09:27 --> 00:09:29 the movie is. And it's like, well, what is the
00:09:29 --> 00:09:33 movie? They couldn't make it. So, and that's,
00:09:33 --> 00:09:34 again, I don't want to go into that because I'm
00:09:34 --> 00:09:38 going to have a whole argument. But that's a
00:09:38 --> 00:09:42 whole different episode. But what was your first
00:09:42 --> 00:09:44 encounter with her? I know my first encounter
00:09:44 --> 00:09:47 with her was Chucky, but you being such a horror.
00:09:48 --> 00:09:51 Fea, what was your first encounter with horror?
00:09:51 --> 00:09:55 Well, I don't, because of my ADHD, I have no,
00:09:55 --> 00:09:59 I haven't got the best memory, but actually one
00:09:59 --> 00:10:03 of the first ones was not Chucky, but Bride of
00:10:03 --> 00:10:05 Chucky. Oh, I love that. That was my first shock
00:10:05 --> 00:10:09 in theaters. Yeah. So that may be one of them.
00:10:09 --> 00:10:13 Also Village of the Damned by John Carpenter.
00:10:15 --> 00:10:19 Also The Sixth Sense. I love that one always.
00:10:19 --> 00:10:23 But if I have to like to think of like the first
00:10:23 --> 00:10:26 horror movie I've watched, I really don't remember.
00:10:27 --> 00:10:31 I remember I love watching Beetlejuice, for example,
00:10:31 --> 00:10:35 with my family. I've watched, I don't know, the
00:10:35 --> 00:10:38 ending of The Day of the Beast. Oh, yes. That
00:10:38 --> 00:10:40 one's yours. Yeah, that's the Spanish one. The
00:10:40 --> 00:10:45 other one is, yes. Yes. Yes. Dad traumatized
00:10:45 --> 00:10:48 me because I watched it, I don't know how old,
00:10:48 --> 00:10:52 I was like seven or something like that. And
00:10:52 --> 00:10:55 I guess my parents were watching it and I sneaked
00:10:55 --> 00:11:01 out from the bed, took a look. And I just watched
00:11:01 --> 00:11:05 the part where Satan appears, this kind of half
00:11:05 --> 00:11:09 man, half boat thing. And I was like, what the
00:11:09 --> 00:11:11 fuck is that? And that's on Christmas, probably.
00:11:12 --> 00:11:16 Yeah, yeah. And that's a Christmas word. Of course.
00:11:16 --> 00:11:20 So I remember this little bits and pieces. Also
00:11:20 --> 00:11:25 it from the 90s. Rest in peace to Curry. Yeah.
00:11:25 --> 00:11:31 Yeah, yeah. And that one hit. Why? Yeah. Why
00:11:31 --> 00:11:34 always the best ones? So bad. I'm rewatching
00:11:34 --> 00:11:37 actually one of my favorites from when I was
00:11:37 --> 00:11:40 a kid. That is Kongo. Oh, I love Kongo. Also
00:11:40 --> 00:11:45 with Tim Curry. Such a blast. I remember watching
00:11:45 --> 00:11:48 that on HBO by myself in my house. I would cut
00:11:48 --> 00:11:51 school to stay in my house to watch movies that
00:11:51 --> 00:11:55 turned out to be horror. And then I would hide
00:11:55 --> 00:11:58 the rest of the day till my... I was tame home.
00:11:58 --> 00:12:01 And then I had to come out of the, not literal,
00:12:01 --> 00:12:03 well, literally, I had to come out of the closet
00:12:03 --> 00:12:05 because I would hide in the closet from my parents,
00:12:05 --> 00:12:07 you know, because I had cut school. And then
00:12:07 --> 00:12:09 I pretended I just walked into the door like,
00:12:09 --> 00:12:10 hey, it was a great day at school. I haven't
00:12:10 --> 00:12:13 been watching movies here all day. But Condor
00:12:13 --> 00:12:15 was one of those that I watched on HBO growing
00:12:15 --> 00:12:19 up. And I was shitting myself when those monkeys
00:12:19 --> 00:12:22 started killing people. I was like, wait, that's
00:12:22 --> 00:12:26 not about monkeys. The first scene where you
00:12:26 --> 00:12:29 see Bruce Campbell just sitting down eating a
00:12:29 --> 00:12:34 chocolate bar and then his friend throws something
00:12:34 --> 00:12:37 at him and he's like, oh, you're throwing me
00:12:37 --> 00:12:40 things. And he picks this thing and it's an eyeball.
00:12:41 --> 00:12:47 I was traumatized by that when I was a kid, but
00:12:47 --> 00:12:50 I kept watching it because I... Love it. That's
00:12:50 --> 00:12:54 the feeling I love. Getting so shocked, but at
00:12:54 --> 00:12:57 the same time, you can't stop watching. You have
00:12:57 --> 00:13:01 to keep going and you have to rewatch it. So
00:13:01 --> 00:13:05 I love that feeling. Of course, there wasn't
00:13:05 --> 00:13:09 any other genre that gave me that feeling. And
00:13:09 --> 00:13:12 one of the most famous movies that I consider
00:13:12 --> 00:13:18 horror, even though many people don't. is Jurassic
00:13:18 --> 00:13:21 Park by Steven Spielberg. For me, it's a horror
00:13:21 --> 00:13:23 movie. It's a creature feature, really. It's
00:13:23 --> 00:13:25 like Jaws. Jaws is horror. It's a creature feature.
00:13:26 --> 00:13:29 A lot of people take them as big blockbusters.
00:13:29 --> 00:13:32 Jaws, Jurassic Park. Adventure movie. Yeah, and
00:13:32 --> 00:13:34 they're horror. Yeah, they're horror. Like, at
00:13:34 --> 00:13:35 the end of the day, it's like an adventure movie.
00:13:35 --> 00:13:38 I love dinosaurs, but if a dinosaur is eating
00:13:38 --> 00:13:41 somebody, like, that is not... Walking with dinosaurs
00:13:41 --> 00:13:44 at this point or The Land Before Times. No, that
00:13:44 --> 00:13:47 is a horror movie. No, it's not. But would you,
00:13:47 --> 00:13:49 at least like your family, you did tell me a
00:13:49 --> 00:13:52 story a while ago and how you started collecting
00:13:52 --> 00:13:56 some VHS that were basically given to you by
00:13:56 --> 00:13:58 your aunt. I will let you tell that story. But
00:13:58 --> 00:14:01 because of that story, did you grow up also watching
00:14:01 --> 00:14:03 horror with your family or was it just you and
00:14:03 --> 00:14:06 your sisters that, you know, you found that out
00:14:06 --> 00:14:09 by yourselves? Besides the fact that you walked
00:14:09 --> 00:14:14 into the day of the beast. Well, no, no. Horror
00:14:14 --> 00:14:18 has always been in my family. Like my parents
00:14:18 --> 00:14:23 used to watch many horror movies and used to
00:14:23 --> 00:14:26 be quite permissive with me watching some things.
00:14:27 --> 00:14:31 Actually, my dad has had... He considered it
00:14:31 --> 00:14:35 funny to show something traumatizing to us to
00:14:35 --> 00:14:38 then keep haunting us by saying something from
00:14:38 --> 00:14:41 the movie or like, oh, whoever is going to come
00:14:41 --> 00:14:46 and get you and things like that, right? I think
00:14:46 --> 00:14:51 it's not right, but okay. But well, I didn't
00:14:51 --> 00:14:54 turn out that bad at the end. And my mom was
00:14:54 --> 00:14:59 also reading Stephen King. She had... Some books
00:14:59 --> 00:15:06 at home. So that was also a way of getting to
00:15:06 --> 00:15:10 know Stephen King as well. And my aunt. My aunt
00:15:10 --> 00:15:14 was a horror fan for sure. Was my mom's sister.
00:15:15 --> 00:15:20 And anytime I went to the village, she lived.
00:15:20 --> 00:15:25 She had this VHS collection. Also some DVDs later
00:15:25 --> 00:15:28 on. But I remember watching with her all this
00:15:28 --> 00:15:30 movie, like Village of the Dead. I don't know
00:15:30 --> 00:15:34 how many times I asked her to put it. Like, yeah,
00:15:34 --> 00:15:36 yeah, I want to watch it again all the time.
00:15:36 --> 00:15:38 And she was fed up sometimes and I understand
00:15:38 --> 00:15:44 it. But yeah, it was great. Those moments, both
00:15:44 --> 00:15:48 of us watching something on TV, it was great.
00:15:48 --> 00:15:53 And for that, as a way of remembering her, because
00:15:53 --> 00:15:58 she passed away last year. I have recently found
00:15:58 --> 00:16:02 a VHS collection and I'm keeping it right behind
00:16:02 --> 00:16:05 me. I wish my uncles would leave me a collection
00:16:05 --> 00:16:10 like that, to be honest. So you grew up where
00:16:10 --> 00:16:12 I hear you saying a lot of American horror, but
00:16:12 --> 00:16:16 how did you discover horror in Spain? At least
00:16:16 --> 00:16:19 like Spanish horror, because you guys have some
00:16:19 --> 00:16:23 very hardcore horror. Yeah, we do. Apart from...
00:16:23 --> 00:16:27 Day of the Beast, I think the first time I was
00:16:27 --> 00:16:33 aware of watching Spanish horror is when I was
00:16:33 --> 00:16:37 a teenager and I went to the cinema to watch
00:16:37 --> 00:16:42 Wreck by Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza. If you
00:16:42 --> 00:16:47 haven't watched it, seriously, it's one of the
00:16:47 --> 00:16:50 best zombie movies you'll ever watch. It's just
00:16:50 --> 00:16:54 amazing. The whole, I'm going to say trilogy
00:16:54 --> 00:16:58 because the fourth one, we just should forget
00:16:58 --> 00:17:03 it exists. We just, yeah, just put it over there
00:17:03 --> 00:17:07 where no one will watch it. But the three firsts
00:17:07 --> 00:17:11 are terrific, are great. The first one is the
00:17:11 --> 00:17:14 best, but I have a really good time watching
00:17:14 --> 00:17:17 the third one as well, which takes place in a
00:17:17 --> 00:17:20 wedding. Oh, wow. And it's very, very funny.
00:17:20 --> 00:17:25 It's very funny. Wedding zombie movie. I remember
00:17:25 --> 00:17:28 going to the cinema with my friends to watch
00:17:28 --> 00:17:34 it. And we were genuinely terrified by some scenes,
00:17:34 --> 00:17:38 especially going to the end of the movie. And
00:17:38 --> 00:17:42 then I was like, well, this was made by a guy
00:17:42 --> 00:17:45 called Jamal Balaguer. OK, so I have to investigate
00:17:45 --> 00:17:49 who is this guy? Has he made more movies? And
00:17:49 --> 00:17:53 yes, I found. Darkness, which is amazing as well.
00:17:54 --> 00:17:58 Then later on, he released Fragile. So when I
00:17:58 --> 00:18:02 heard he was going to release a new movie, I
00:18:02 --> 00:18:05 had to go and see it. And I fell in love with
00:18:05 --> 00:18:10 Chama Balagueró. He's a director from Luña. I
00:18:10 --> 00:18:12 don't know if he's from Barcelona or from all
00:18:12 --> 00:18:15 the place, but yeah, from Cataluña. And he's
00:18:15 --> 00:18:18 great. Paco Plaza as well, who made the first
00:18:18 --> 00:18:21 one with him. And I think the second one as well.
00:18:22 --> 00:18:23 They made the first and the second one together.
00:18:24 --> 00:18:27 Then the third one, it was just Paco Plaza. And
00:18:27 --> 00:18:30 the fourth one was Jaume Belagueró, Not His Best
00:18:30 --> 00:18:37 Day. I've heard of Plaza before. But when I go
00:18:37 --> 00:18:41 to Madrid, which I love, I go to FNAC and I go
00:18:41 --> 00:18:43 to the horror section. I love their horror section.
00:18:43 --> 00:18:46 And a lot of the titles that I brought back are
00:18:46 --> 00:18:48 a lot of Spanish titles. I have... a bunch of
00:18:48 --> 00:18:50 stacks here on the floor that I haven't gone
00:18:50 --> 00:18:54 through. I bought the Day of the Beast. I bought
00:18:54 --> 00:18:56 it over there in Madrid last year. Oh, this year,
00:18:56 --> 00:19:00 I'm sorry, May. The FNAC reopened. The horror
00:19:00 --> 00:19:02 section is just amazing there at FNAC. And every
00:19:02 --> 00:19:04 time I go, I can find it for so much cheaper.
00:19:05 --> 00:19:06 And I'm like, yeah, I got to take those. Especially,
00:19:07 --> 00:19:09 I try to take Spanish horror because like you
00:19:09 --> 00:19:11 said, you know, watch Wreck. I'm not going to
00:19:11 --> 00:19:14 buy it over here when I go over there a lot and
00:19:14 --> 00:19:16 it's much cheaper and they also have it on DVD
00:19:16 --> 00:19:18 and Blu -rays. I don't need a 4K of that because
00:19:18 --> 00:19:21 I don't know much of the movie. But if I end
00:19:21 --> 00:19:23 up liking it, then I'll upgrade. It's a found
00:19:23 --> 00:19:27 footage, so I wouldn't think a 4K is going to
00:19:27 --> 00:19:30 do it any favors. All the opposite. It's better
00:19:30 --> 00:19:34 to watch it like as grainy as possible. That's
00:19:34 --> 00:19:36 why I'm kind of afraid right now. To the spirit.
00:19:37 --> 00:19:39 Yeah, I'm kind of afraid right now with 28 Days
00:19:39 --> 00:19:43 Later. That came out on 4K because it's a 420p.
00:19:44 --> 00:19:47 Yes, a 420p recording. And I'm like, how is that
00:19:47 --> 00:19:50 supposed to upgrade to 4K? I don't know. I'll
00:19:50 --> 00:19:52 find out when I get there and I'll complain about
00:19:52 --> 00:19:55 it later if it's best. It was an expensive steelbook
00:19:55 --> 00:19:59 so I can return it. And so we'll see. But how
00:19:59 --> 00:20:02 did you, do you have friends who were just obsessed
00:20:02 --> 00:20:05 with horror or were you the only standout of
00:20:05 --> 00:20:09 the group? Not many, to be honest. I have one
00:20:09 --> 00:20:12 of my best friends. Yeah, she likes horror, but
00:20:12 --> 00:20:16 she's more of a mainstream horror fan. She's
00:20:16 --> 00:20:18 always asking me, like, I want to watch a horror
00:20:18 --> 00:20:22 movie that is really scary, like for real. And
00:20:22 --> 00:20:25 sometimes he recommends her things and she's
00:20:25 --> 00:20:27 like, yeah, it was good, but it's not horror.
00:20:27 --> 00:20:31 And I was like, what do you mean? Because it
00:20:31 --> 00:20:34 didn't make me feel scared to be frightened.
00:20:34 --> 00:20:37 I was like. Okay, like horror doesn't always
00:20:37 --> 00:20:41 have to make you frightened. It's not the condition
00:20:41 --> 00:20:45 to me for a film. I went to watch Wreck with
00:20:45 --> 00:20:48 her when we were teenagers. Problem is she's
00:20:48 --> 00:20:51 far away now. She's living in Tarragona. When
00:20:51 --> 00:20:54 she comes here for visits, which is not often,
00:20:54 --> 00:20:57 we try to go and watch something. I think the
00:20:57 --> 00:21:01 last one we watched together, I don't remember
00:21:01 --> 00:21:05 if it was Talk to Me or the previous one. Like
00:21:05 --> 00:21:08 that fifth in Sirius, I think. I don't remember
00:21:08 --> 00:21:11 which one, but one of those. Yeah. And apart
00:21:11 --> 00:21:15 from her, my husband likes horror a bit, but
00:21:15 --> 00:21:20 he's more classic. He's a Hitchcock fan. He loves
00:21:20 --> 00:21:23 Sixth Sense. More classic horror, but sometimes
00:21:23 --> 00:21:26 a goofy movie. For example, the other night we
00:21:26 --> 00:21:31 watched The Microwave Massacre. What? Awful movie.
00:21:31 --> 00:21:34 It's like... So dumb, but seriously, it's not
00:21:34 --> 00:21:37 even funny. So dumb, it's not even funny. I was
00:21:37 --> 00:21:39 disappointed. We thought at least we would laugh
00:21:39 --> 00:21:44 a little bit, but it had been like, what is happening?
00:21:44 --> 00:21:50 Who wrote the script? Is there a script? It's,
00:21:50 --> 00:21:52 yeah, not the best movie I've watched. We kind
00:21:52 --> 00:21:55 of alternate. Sometimes we look for something
00:21:55 --> 00:21:59 more serious. Other times we look for a camp,
00:21:59 --> 00:22:06 goofy one. from the 70s or the 80s. But he's
00:22:06 --> 00:22:13 not as hardcore fan, I would say, as I am. You
00:22:13 --> 00:22:16 live in Zamora, and most of the, I would say,
00:22:16 --> 00:22:19 the movie culture is kind of divided between
00:22:19 --> 00:22:24 Barcelona and Madrid, these two big cities that...
00:22:25 --> 00:22:29 How do you feel? How is the culture? And compared
00:22:29 --> 00:22:32 to the big cities, how is the culture in that
00:22:32 --> 00:22:36 area? It's hard. It's hard to find horror fans
00:22:36 --> 00:22:40 around here. Because first of all, Zamora is
00:22:40 --> 00:22:46 a city, it's a small city with obviously fewer
00:22:46 --> 00:22:49 population than Madrid and Barcelona, but also
00:22:49 --> 00:22:54 with like most of the people who live here are
00:22:54 --> 00:22:59 old. And I mean old over 70s. Okay. That old.
00:23:00 --> 00:23:05 And well, I wish I could find a 70s something
00:23:05 --> 00:23:09 group of people that were horror fans. That would
00:23:09 --> 00:23:12 be lovely. But I don't think, no, I don't think
00:23:12 --> 00:23:16 I will here. People are more traditional, more,
00:23:16 --> 00:23:19 I don't know, even like talking with the cinema
00:23:19 --> 00:23:21 owner here, because we only have one cinema.
00:23:23 --> 00:23:26 Even talking with him, he says horror movies
00:23:26 --> 00:23:32 don't get as much funny as others. Most of the
00:23:32 --> 00:23:35 times I've gone to the cinema to watch something,
00:23:35 --> 00:23:39 it's me, maybe five more people. Something like
00:23:39 --> 00:23:43 that. Okay. And it's quite sad. Well, apart from
00:23:43 --> 00:23:47 what happened during this summer with both Backrooms
00:23:47 --> 00:23:50 and Obsession, that I was really, really surprised.
00:23:51 --> 00:23:55 It was packed. It was... Awesome. Like I can
00:23:55 --> 00:23:57 understand in places like Madrid and Barcelona,
00:23:57 --> 00:24:01 because I guess that's more normal, but here
00:24:01 --> 00:24:04 it was like, wow. I saw Black Lives Matter in
00:24:04 --> 00:24:07 Madrid and that was packed. I saw it at Cine
00:24:07 --> 00:24:09 de Alice and that was act. And I was like, oh,
00:24:09 --> 00:24:12 that was a scary movie. I saw a scary movie,
00:24:12 --> 00:24:16 The Six, the new one. I saw it also in Cine de
00:24:16 --> 00:24:19 Alice. It was packed. It was, I'm like, oh, okay.
00:24:20 --> 00:24:23 Those people really do love horror. They do recommend
00:24:23 --> 00:24:26 good horror. They really know their stuff. I'm
00:24:26 --> 00:24:28 not bad. I'm a little bit fine. That's why I
00:24:28 --> 00:24:31 love Redress so much. But yeah, it's like discovering.
00:24:31 --> 00:24:35 Not so much. Yeah, discovering. But discovering
00:24:35 --> 00:24:39 horror movies from Spain has given me a different
00:24:39 --> 00:24:41 perspective. And I know some people talk about
00:24:41 --> 00:24:45 how hardcore some of those movies are at the
00:24:45 --> 00:24:49 coffee table. I wasn't a big fan of it. I liked
00:24:49 --> 00:24:51 the actress. I liked the actress was there because
00:24:51 --> 00:24:54 I love her. The wife of the guy, I forgot her
00:24:54 --> 00:24:56 name. I love her. So I bought the movie because
00:24:56 --> 00:24:58 of her. And a lot of people talked about the
00:24:58 --> 00:25:02 movie. I wasn't a big fan of it. It's more of
00:25:02 --> 00:25:08 a psychological horror because besides the event
00:25:08 --> 00:25:11 that happens, everything else is more psychological
00:25:11 --> 00:25:14 and is more creepy. because of the relationship
00:25:14 --> 00:25:17 between the, well, not a relationship, it's a
00:25:17 --> 00:25:19 young girl who then she has a relationship with
00:25:19 --> 00:25:22 an older man. That's kind of creepy. So that's
00:25:22 --> 00:25:24 the only thing. And we're missing a little bit
00:25:24 --> 00:25:27 of Halloween 3, but Halloween 3, you have the
00:25:27 --> 00:25:30 older guy with a young lady. The movie sounds
00:25:30 --> 00:25:33 scary. Oh, okay. Yeah. The only creepy thing
00:25:33 --> 00:25:35 is this relationship. That's what scares me in
00:25:35 --> 00:25:38 the whole movie. Not the witches over there.
00:25:38 --> 00:25:41 No, it's this relationship. with this older guy
00:25:41 --> 00:25:44 and this beautiful young woman. It is. It is.
00:25:44 --> 00:25:48 That is disgusting. But that's normal. There's
00:25:48 --> 00:25:52 always an older guy with a young lady. But that's
00:25:52 --> 00:25:54 America, really. That's not even horror. That's
00:25:54 --> 00:25:58 just America. Yeah, it is. Do you remember your
00:25:58 --> 00:26:02 first horror movie that you were completely obsessed
00:26:02 --> 00:26:06 with? Not necessarily like the first one you
00:26:06 --> 00:26:08 watch. For me, obviously, everybody here knows
00:26:08 --> 00:26:11 The Scream. That's like my first horror obsession.
00:26:11 --> 00:26:13 But what was your first movie that you're like,
00:26:13 --> 00:26:16 yeah, no, this is my movie. And replaying over
00:26:16 --> 00:26:18 and over nonstop. I was a teenager right then.
00:26:19 --> 00:26:22 But it has to be May. Oh, May. You know, I haven't
00:26:22 --> 00:26:28 seen May. 2002, Lucky Monkey. Well, I was so
00:26:28 --> 00:26:32 obsessed. Anytime I opened an account of a website,
00:26:32 --> 00:26:35 a forum, an email, whatever, I was May underscore
00:26:35 --> 00:26:40 Kennedy, which is like her full name. Like all
00:26:40 --> 00:26:44 the time, I was so, so obsessed. And by that
00:26:44 --> 00:26:47 time, I don't know if I had something that here
00:26:47 --> 00:26:50 was called Photologue. I don't know if you heard
00:26:50 --> 00:26:53 about that. It was like a photo social network.
00:26:53 --> 00:26:57 Well, you just posted a photo. You could post
00:26:57 --> 00:27:01 just one photo per day. I posted the photo and
00:27:01 --> 00:27:05 you could write small text. And then you had
00:27:05 --> 00:27:08 friends and they could write on your wall and
00:27:08 --> 00:27:10 that. It was like a blog. It was more like a
00:27:10 --> 00:27:17 blog. And I only posted it. It was like friends
00:27:17 --> 00:27:20 of the movie and quotes from the movie. And I
00:27:20 --> 00:27:22 was just, yeah, it was everything for me. It
00:27:22 --> 00:27:27 was so, so, so good. It hit me so hard. And now
00:27:27 --> 00:27:31 I understand better why. Actually, like the last
00:27:31 --> 00:27:36 program we recorded for the podcast with my sister,
00:27:37 --> 00:27:41 it was about May and Carrie. And you call this
00:27:41 --> 00:27:46 dysphoria, like sensitive, rejection sensitive
00:27:46 --> 00:27:48 dysphoria or something like that. I don't know
00:27:48 --> 00:27:51 how to translate it. But it's one of the common
00:27:51 --> 00:27:56 traits in ADHD people. And it's that feeling
00:27:56 --> 00:27:58 that you are not enough, that you're going to
00:27:58 --> 00:28:01 be rejected all the time, that people are always
00:28:01 --> 00:28:04 thinking bad things about you, all these things,
00:28:04 --> 00:28:08 right? That kind of hinders your ability to socialize
00:28:08 --> 00:28:11 with people because you feel all the time very
00:28:11 --> 00:28:19 awkward and very like too self -aware. And I
00:28:19 --> 00:28:23 think both Carrie and May reflect that feeling
00:28:23 --> 00:28:26 very well. We took them both, both characters,
00:28:26 --> 00:28:30 to talk about this issue. The way I was analyzing
00:28:30 --> 00:28:33 the movie and everything, I was like, of course
00:28:33 --> 00:28:37 I love this movie. What's up, teenager? Of course
00:28:37 --> 00:28:40 I love it. I've read a lot of the movie, May,
00:28:40 --> 00:28:43 and it's a very underrated movie. When it came
00:28:43 --> 00:28:45 out in theaters and I didn't get a chance to
00:28:45 --> 00:28:48 see it. But it's a cover that every time you
00:28:48 --> 00:28:50 see it, you know the cover, you know her face
00:28:50 --> 00:28:53 in the cover. You know, it's a very iconic at
00:28:53 --> 00:28:55 this point. And at least some people are talking
00:28:55 --> 00:28:59 about it now. I've heard a lot of YouTubers that
00:28:59 --> 00:29:02 recommend horror. They recommended it. And from
00:29:02 --> 00:29:04 the women's perspective, I've heard of it many
00:29:04 --> 00:29:07 times on YouTube. But now you have some men that
00:29:07 --> 00:29:10 are starting to talk about the film. I'm pretty
00:29:10 --> 00:29:13 sure at one point... Somebody will grab it, you
00:29:13 --> 00:29:14 know, a boutique label or something. They'll
00:29:14 --> 00:29:17 make a beautiful copy and then everybody will
00:29:17 --> 00:29:20 own it. That's how it works. I've had that in
00:29:20 --> 00:29:21 my list. I've been wanting to watch it because
00:29:21 --> 00:29:26 it is a very strong female -led movie. It does,
00:29:26 --> 00:29:31 again, goes back to the point where men kind
00:29:31 --> 00:29:34 of suppress women into a role. She's responding
00:29:34 --> 00:29:37 based on how she's being treated. That's the
00:29:37 --> 00:29:41 thing. And that makes it horror right now. And
00:29:41 --> 00:29:44 Universal Studios and Horror Nights, they're
00:29:44 --> 00:29:47 going to have Nicki from Obsession, wamping around
00:29:47 --> 00:29:50 with her butt. I posted on Instagram. Yeah, yeah,
00:29:50 --> 00:29:53 I saw it. And people are like, how is she? the,
00:29:54 --> 00:29:56 you know, the villain. The villain, obviously.
00:29:57 --> 00:29:59 Which she's not. Exactly. So it's like, you have
00:29:59 --> 00:30:00 her walking around. She is a big character. Exactly.
00:30:00 --> 00:30:03 You have her walking around with blood, you know,
00:30:03 --> 00:30:05 telling people, why don't you love me? I'm like,
00:30:05 --> 00:30:08 that's not horror. She's a prisoner baked out
00:30:08 --> 00:30:10 of someone who made a wish and you're having
00:30:10 --> 00:30:12 her? Why don't you have the guy in a hoodie walking
00:30:12 --> 00:30:15 around, like, making wishes for people? Like,
00:30:15 --> 00:30:17 that's the real villain. Yeah, that's the real
00:30:17 --> 00:30:20 villain. Why would you have the kiss of it walking
00:30:20 --> 00:30:22 around with balloons when you should have the
00:30:22 --> 00:30:24 clown? And it's the same thing when they have
00:30:24 --> 00:30:26 Regan from the Exorcist. People call her the
00:30:26 --> 00:30:29 Exorcist. Well, her name is Regan. The Exorcist
00:30:29 --> 00:30:31 is what you do. Well, it's always been the same
00:30:31 --> 00:30:34 with Frankenstein, right? It's not Frankenstein.
00:30:34 --> 00:30:36 It's the monster. The creature, the monster,
00:30:36 --> 00:30:39 yeah. We can agree the monster, the real monster,
00:30:39 --> 00:30:42 always has been Frankenstein. I mean, Victor
00:30:42 --> 00:30:45 Frankenstein. Exactly. Exactly. That's always
00:30:45 --> 00:30:47 the thing because the monster or the creature
00:30:47 --> 00:30:50 is not really the villain in the movie, again.
00:30:50 --> 00:30:53 And there's moments of, obviously this is not
00:30:53 --> 00:30:55 a spoiler because this movie is from the 1930s.
00:30:55 --> 00:30:58 The scene where he's with the little girl, that
00:30:58 --> 00:31:00 scene is so beautiful. And then, you know, he
00:31:00 --> 00:31:03 gets playful. You know, it's like when you have
00:31:03 --> 00:31:06 a dog and then the dog is like five feet tall
00:31:06 --> 00:31:08 and is with a child or something like that. Something
00:31:08 --> 00:31:11 might happen because it's happened before. You
00:31:11 --> 00:31:14 know, the dog doesn't know the limits. And that's
00:31:14 --> 00:31:16 how I felt when I watched that movie. Technically,
00:31:16 --> 00:31:19 it's a horror classic. But is it a horror classic
00:31:19 --> 00:31:21 because of the monster? Is it a horror classic
00:31:21 --> 00:31:23 because of the monster that was creating this
00:31:23 --> 00:31:26 creature? It's a little misunderstood, just like
00:31:26 --> 00:31:30 Obsession is. And I feel like the more people
00:31:30 --> 00:31:33 talk about it, obviously, the more women talk
00:31:33 --> 00:31:35 about it, the more people realize, like, yeah,
00:31:35 --> 00:31:38 the Ozakai is the monster. Now you know how it
00:31:38 --> 00:31:41 feels. Like, you see it on... On the screen,
00:31:41 --> 00:31:45 how it feels to be a woman trapped by the wishes
00:31:45 --> 00:31:47 of a man. It's funny because I feel like over
00:31:47 --> 00:31:50 here in America, we're kind of seeing a lot of
00:31:50 --> 00:31:53 women that you don't have to make a wish, really,
00:31:53 --> 00:31:55 for them to be submissive. And I'm like, yeah,
00:31:55 --> 00:31:57 that's scary now. You have these women that are
00:31:57 --> 00:31:59 giving up their rights for everything, their
00:31:59 --> 00:32:01 women rights, because, oh, the man can choose,
00:32:01 --> 00:32:04 make the decisions for me. And I'm like, okay,
00:32:05 --> 00:32:09 so you are Nikki. Yeah. So you are Nikki. Freaky
00:32:09 --> 00:32:12 Nikki. Yes. And you're freaky Nikki. You're volunteering
00:32:12 --> 00:32:14 to give up every rights without the men having
00:32:14 --> 00:32:16 to wish for it. But like you said, you have Carrie,
00:32:16 --> 00:32:19 now you have Nikki, and you have May, which is
00:32:19 --> 00:32:22 like three strong females that are basically
00:32:22 --> 00:32:25 taken differently from society. Yeah, and actually
00:32:25 --> 00:32:29 May and now Nikki, I think, well, like their
00:32:29 --> 00:32:33 stories are... Really great ways of subverting,
00:32:34 --> 00:32:36 how you say that, like the trope of the manic
00:32:36 --> 00:32:39 pixie dream girl. Because there are many times
00:32:39 --> 00:32:42 in the movie, well, not many times, mostly one
00:32:42 --> 00:32:46 time, where Adam, which is the boy Emma is in
00:32:46 --> 00:32:50 love with, and they start dating. And Adam is
00:32:50 --> 00:32:55 just saying things like, oh, I like weird girls.
00:32:55 --> 00:33:03 Yeah. It's like, seriously. Once things don't
00:33:03 --> 00:33:07 go the way he wanted, like May is like, oh, you
00:33:07 --> 00:33:11 said you like weird. And he's like, but not that
00:33:11 --> 00:33:15 weird. Yeah. And he's like, seriously, that's
00:33:15 --> 00:33:17 the whole conception of the manic pixie dream
00:33:17 --> 00:33:21 girl, right? Do you like the weird girl, like
00:33:21 --> 00:33:25 the sparkly, like the one that is different from
00:33:25 --> 00:33:28 the others, right? But you like her as long as
00:33:28 --> 00:33:33 it fits. into the concept you have created for
00:33:33 --> 00:33:39 her. When she gets out of this, then she's the
00:33:39 --> 00:33:43 villain or she's no longer interesting, right?
00:33:43 --> 00:33:47 She has become like the others or she's the crazy
00:33:47 --> 00:33:51 ex -girlfriend or things like that. And I love
00:33:51 --> 00:33:56 how May and an obsession portray this specific
00:33:56 --> 00:34:02 situation. Turn, twist, and dad manic pixie dream
00:34:02 --> 00:34:05 girl. You want it weird? You're gonna get weird.
00:34:05 --> 00:34:08 Don't worry. Yeah, it's always like that. When
00:34:08 --> 00:34:11 they don't have the power, that's when things
00:34:11 --> 00:34:14 get creepy. And that's not what I wanted. That's
00:34:14 --> 00:34:16 not what I meant. You know, it's the misinterpretation
00:34:16 --> 00:34:19 and the gaslighting. It's like, no, I didn't
00:34:19 --> 00:34:23 mean that. I didn't mean that weird. Taking it
00:34:23 --> 00:34:28 back to Spanish horror. Is there a movie? necessarily
00:34:28 --> 00:34:31 like that at least like obsession because i'm
00:34:31 --> 00:34:33 trying to think to see if there's any anything
00:34:33 --> 00:34:37 along that line that i've seen from from spain
00:34:37 --> 00:34:41 i know spain has a lot of movies that are female
00:34:41 --> 00:34:43 driven and that's why i love like i said i love
00:34:43 --> 00:34:46 peter malova because he does have a lot of female
00:34:46 --> 00:34:49 driven roles that are campy and not all the movies
00:34:49 --> 00:34:52 are good you know because i gotta be honest not
00:34:52 --> 00:34:56 all the movies are good but i do love a strong
00:34:56 --> 00:35:01 female lead When it comes to his films and seeing
00:35:01 --> 00:35:04 movies in horror that have a strong female lead,
00:35:04 --> 00:35:07 you either have people complain like Mother Mary
00:35:07 --> 00:35:10 that it's like, oh, this is not a horror movie.
00:35:10 --> 00:35:12 Well, technically it is and it's not. If that's
00:35:12 --> 00:35:15 not a horror movie, then a lot of other movies
00:35:15 --> 00:35:16 that have come out this year that don't have
00:35:16 --> 00:35:19 that same element are not horror. And the sense
00:35:19 --> 00:35:21 of the supernatural elements that were happening
00:35:21 --> 00:35:24 in the movie were horror elements. It's just,
00:35:25 --> 00:35:28 again, it's not your cup of tea. I feel like
00:35:28 --> 00:35:32 when it comes to Spain, I don't remember or recall
00:35:32 --> 00:35:36 any movie that's like, you know, along that line
00:35:36 --> 00:35:40 of May, Carrie and Obsession. Not the same story,
00:35:40 --> 00:35:42 but with a female, strong female characters.
00:35:43 --> 00:35:47 Yeah, I can think of a few. Lately, we had Cerdita,
00:35:47 --> 00:35:51 Piggy, actually directed by a woman, Carlota
00:35:51 --> 00:35:55 Pereda, which is Slasher. It's Slasher and also...
00:35:56 --> 00:36:00 It is set in like a small rural community in
00:36:00 --> 00:36:04 like inner Spain. So that is different. That
00:36:04 --> 00:36:07 is different from what we are used to watching
00:36:07 --> 00:36:10 horror. It's really, really good. It's about
00:36:10 --> 00:36:13 a girl who has been bullied because she's fat
00:36:13 --> 00:36:18 by all the girls in her village. And then she
00:36:18 --> 00:36:22 witnesses these girls being kidnapped by a killer.
00:36:22 --> 00:36:27 And then she has to... kind of like decide what
00:36:27 --> 00:36:30 what is she going to do is she going to save
00:36:30 --> 00:36:34 these girls who have who have been brutal with
00:36:34 --> 00:36:37 her like like really really bad bullying i'm
00:36:37 --> 00:36:41 talking about yeah or or is she going to do like
00:36:41 --> 00:36:46 she hasn't seen anything yeah and it is it is
00:36:46 --> 00:36:49 really good i like it a lot then we also have
00:36:49 --> 00:36:52 from the same director we had la ermita which
00:36:52 --> 00:36:56 i don't know how they translate it And it's about
00:36:56 --> 00:36:59 more of a little bit of folk horror and ghost
00:36:59 --> 00:37:04 stories with a little girl who gets together
00:37:04 --> 00:37:08 with a woman who used to work as a medium, but
00:37:08 --> 00:37:11 now is like disenchanted from all these things.
00:37:11 --> 00:37:15 And they work together to solve a mystery surrounding
00:37:15 --> 00:37:19 something terrible that happened in like a chapel,
00:37:19 --> 00:37:23 like an old chapel. And it's quite interesting.
00:37:23 --> 00:37:30 Also, I could say, well, in Wreck 3, you have
00:37:30 --> 00:37:34 the bride by Leticia Dolera, and she has a really,
00:37:35 --> 00:37:39 really great scene involving a tunnel, a chainsaw,
00:37:39 --> 00:37:43 and many zombies. That scene is great. And also,
00:37:43 --> 00:37:49 I could think of, oh, Sexy Killer. Oh, Sexy Killer.
00:37:49 --> 00:37:52 I need to get Sexy Killer. It was a podcast,
00:37:52 --> 00:37:56 and I think it was either a Spanish -Latino podcast.
00:37:56 --> 00:37:59 And they recommended Sexy Killer, and I started
00:37:59 --> 00:38:02 digging into Sexy Killer. And I remember seeing
00:38:02 --> 00:38:05 the cover, and the reason I heard of it wasn't
00:38:05 --> 00:38:08 even because it was a horror podcast. It wasn't
00:38:08 --> 00:38:10 a horror conversation. They were talking about
00:38:10 --> 00:38:14 Spanish films, and they even mentioned Malo Vad,
00:38:14 --> 00:38:18 and they mentioned other Can't Be movies. It
00:38:18 --> 00:38:21 is campy. It's good campy. And they were talking
00:38:21 --> 00:38:25 about queer films and they mentioned that too.
00:38:25 --> 00:38:27 And I was like, oh, so this probably has it all.
00:38:28 --> 00:38:33 It's campy. It's a slasher. It is a zombie movie.
00:38:35 --> 00:38:39 It's a mess. It's a complete mess, but it's such
00:38:39 --> 00:38:45 good fun. Witching and bitching. I forgot the
00:38:45 --> 00:38:48 name in Spanish. Las brujas de su gato muerto.
00:38:48 --> 00:38:51 Yeah. Well, it has, yeah. That's why I forgot
00:38:51 --> 00:38:55 the name. Because I'm like, I forgot the city.
00:38:55 --> 00:38:57 Yeah, the last part. Is it at Zugarramurdi? It
00:38:57 --> 00:39:00 actually exists. It's a village in the north
00:39:00 --> 00:39:02 of Spain, in the Basque Country. Yeah, I know.
00:39:02 --> 00:39:03 I looked for it because I'm like, where is it?
00:39:03 --> 00:39:06 Because I think they go from the city center
00:39:06 --> 00:39:08 and then they just make their way down there.
00:39:08 --> 00:39:09 I was like, is this a real city? So I started
00:39:09 --> 00:39:11 looking. I'm like, everything is real. I was
00:39:11 --> 00:39:15 like, oh, okay. I need to have, like, well, it
00:39:15 --> 00:39:17 didn't happen like the things that happened in
00:39:17 --> 00:39:22 the movie. But it was a case of a trial of witches
00:39:22 --> 00:39:28 in that place. I got the movie, and I didn't
00:39:28 --> 00:39:30 even know what I was expecting. I sat down and
00:39:30 --> 00:39:32 watched, and I was like, I didn't know what to
00:39:32 --> 00:39:33 expect from the movie. I just thought it was
00:39:33 --> 00:39:36 good. It's the stupidest thing I've ever seen.
00:39:37 --> 00:39:39 It doesn't make sense. Just when you think it's
00:39:39 --> 00:39:43 already stupid, it gets worse. But in a funny
00:39:43 --> 00:39:46 way, and you're like... I don't even know if
00:39:46 --> 00:39:49 to consider it a horror movie. Because technically
00:39:49 --> 00:39:52 it does. It is. It is. But it's just so stupid.
00:39:52 --> 00:39:54 It's like watching. It has witches. Yeah, it
00:39:54 --> 00:39:56 has like watching the naked gun, but horror edition.
00:39:57 --> 00:39:59 Yeah, it has a lot of comedy. It has a lot of
00:39:59 --> 00:40:03 comedy. All the movies by Alex de la Iglesia
00:40:03 --> 00:40:07 has comedies. Yeah. In different amounts, but
00:40:07 --> 00:40:10 yeah. Yeah, I think he always uses comedy. That
00:40:10 --> 00:40:12 movie made me want to watch some of his other
00:40:12 --> 00:40:15 work. I wasn't familiar with him. I didn't know
00:40:15 --> 00:40:18 he did comedy with horror. You know, we get over
00:40:18 --> 00:40:22 here, too. So, yeah. What movie, you know, besides
00:40:22 --> 00:40:26 Witching and Bitching and Sexy Killer, what Spanish
00:40:26 --> 00:40:28 horror movie would you recommend to listeners
00:40:28 --> 00:40:32 that are not too familiar with Spanish? Can I
00:40:32 --> 00:40:35 pick two? Yeah. One new and one classic. Oh,
00:40:35 --> 00:40:37 hell yeah. It's like the more the merrier because
00:40:37 --> 00:40:39 I probably need a few too when I go next time.
00:40:40 --> 00:40:44 Well, the classic is going to be Who Can Kill
00:40:44 --> 00:40:52 the Child? Because it's... It's an amazing movie.
00:40:53 --> 00:40:55 It's so good. And actually there is a version
00:40:55 --> 00:40:59 that is in English, like part of it, because
00:40:59 --> 00:41:03 the two main characters are... British people
00:41:03 --> 00:41:07 are these actor and actress. And it's about a
00:41:07 --> 00:41:10 couple that goes on vacation to Spain, to the
00:41:10 --> 00:41:15 Spanish coast. And they get to an island where
00:41:15 --> 00:41:18 something weird is happening with the kids because
00:41:18 --> 00:41:22 they have started killing all the adults. And
00:41:22 --> 00:41:28 it's really, really disturbing. It's not it.
00:41:28 --> 00:41:33 We are talking about... entertaining movies about
00:41:33 --> 00:41:37 fun camp movies no this is not this is devastating
00:41:37 --> 00:41:40 it is full with dread and it really like poses
00:41:40 --> 00:41:44 that question like in that situation would you
00:41:44 --> 00:41:49 uh be capable of kill a child many children uh
00:41:49 --> 00:41:55 to to survive and yep this is a classic it's
00:41:55 --> 00:41:59 one of the best movies that Not only horror movies,
00:41:59 --> 00:42:03 but one of the best Spanish movies I have ever
00:42:03 --> 00:42:06 seen. And the other one is from a couple of years
00:42:06 --> 00:42:14 ago. I don't know if it was 2024, 23. It's La
00:42:14 --> 00:42:19 Espera, The Wait. I don't remember the name of
00:42:19 --> 00:42:22 the director. It was something from Final Fantasy.
00:42:22 --> 00:42:25 I don't remember. But it's an amazing movie.
00:42:25 --> 00:42:30 It is, again, set in rural Spain in the 70s.
00:42:31 --> 00:42:35 And it's about a man who goes to live to like
00:42:35 --> 00:42:39 a hunting area. And he has to be in charge of
00:42:39 --> 00:42:44 controlling the hunters that go there. So not
00:42:44 --> 00:42:47 too many of them go. kill them like between them
00:42:47 --> 00:42:51 and he goes there with with her his wife and
00:42:51 --> 00:42:58 his kid and something really bad happens from
00:42:58 --> 00:43:02 that moment is like a descent to hell for the
00:43:02 --> 00:43:05 main character is like my protagonist is victor
00:43:05 --> 00:43:10 clavijo he does an amazing job There are many
00:43:10 --> 00:43:13 people talking about this scene in The Odyssey,
00:43:14 --> 00:43:16 Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, where Circe
00:43:16 --> 00:43:20 turns a man into pigs and the effects, like the
00:43:20 --> 00:43:26 practical effects. This movie did it first. So
00:43:26 --> 00:43:29 if you want to find out, you have to watch it.
00:43:29 --> 00:43:32 It's great. What surprised me the most is like
00:43:32 --> 00:43:38 it gets into folk horror. Okay. And it's great.
00:43:38 --> 00:43:41 Like the ending. I love it. It was such a great
00:43:41 --> 00:43:44 surprise because I went to watch it knowing nothing
00:43:44 --> 00:43:48 in Sitges because we got tickets for that one.
00:43:49 --> 00:43:51 And I went with my friend, the one I mentioned
00:43:51 --> 00:43:54 before, the one in Tarragona. The one that doesn't
00:43:54 --> 00:43:57 get scared. Yeah, the one that doesn't get scared,
00:43:57 --> 00:44:01 that one. And yeah, it was like we both loved
00:44:01 --> 00:44:04 it. It was amazing. The first one you mentioned,
00:44:04 --> 00:44:06 Can You Feel a Child, reminds me of, there's
00:44:06 --> 00:44:09 this podcast that I listen to, they're the Latinos,
00:44:09 --> 00:44:13 and they do a podcast called Huic Horror. And
00:44:13 --> 00:44:18 sometimes I listen to the podcast and they do
00:44:18 --> 00:44:21 very, very, very, I'm talking very underrated,
00:44:21 --> 00:44:26 very unknown films. They did a song called Cuello
00:44:26 --> 00:44:29 de Niños, kids play, I guess, or child's play.
00:44:29 --> 00:44:33 And it's about a couple. that takes a vacation
00:44:33 --> 00:44:36 to an island in... It's a remake. Hullbox? I
00:44:36 --> 00:44:39 think it's Hullbox. Yeah. So they go into...
00:44:39 --> 00:44:41 I think... I don't know if it's a remake. I know
00:44:41 --> 00:44:44 the director. I think it might be an American.
00:44:44 --> 00:44:46 I forgot who the director is. The island is run
00:44:46 --> 00:44:50 by kids and they kill the adults. And so it might
00:44:50 --> 00:44:53 be a remake of that because it just sounds identical
00:44:53 --> 00:44:57 to that. And I know there's another part of the
00:44:57 --> 00:45:01 island that there's more kids that are not contaminated.
00:45:01 --> 00:45:04 And there's like a witch lady or something like
00:45:04 --> 00:45:07 that. So, you know, and then when the kids that
00:45:07 --> 00:45:09 are contaminated or possessed go there, they
00:45:09 --> 00:45:12 kind of affect the other kids as well. I don't
00:45:12 --> 00:45:14 really watch a lot of the films that they talk
00:45:14 --> 00:45:16 about. If you haven't listened to the podcast,
00:45:16 --> 00:45:20 they do so many unknown horrors, especially Latin
00:45:20 --> 00:45:22 horror, because that's what they focus on. What
00:45:22 --> 00:45:27 was the podcast name? Oh, Wake Up. They're so
00:45:27 --> 00:45:29 funny. They're best friends, so they have a great
00:45:29 --> 00:45:33 chemistry too. I think I found it. It's Come
00:45:33 --> 00:45:36 Out and Play. Come Out and Play, yes. Beth and
00:45:36 --> 00:45:39 Francis are a young couple, married young couple
00:45:39 --> 00:45:43 on vacation to a remote island. Yes, this is
00:45:43 --> 00:45:47 it. Yes. Okay, I know which one. Yep, yep. This
00:45:47 --> 00:45:53 is a remake. Oh, that's it? Yes, it is. It is
00:45:53 --> 00:45:56 a remake of Who Can Kill a Child? Yes. That's
00:45:56 --> 00:46:05 how my son can't trust Americans. Jenny, I know
00:46:05 --> 00:46:07 you love talking about horror, but when did you
00:46:07 --> 00:46:12 have a shift that you decided to make talking
00:46:12 --> 00:46:18 about horror publicly? Well, it comes from the
00:46:18 --> 00:46:21 need to basically talk about horror with someone.
00:46:23 --> 00:46:26 As I said before, I haven't got many people around
00:46:26 --> 00:46:31 to share this passion. And since it's funny,
00:46:31 --> 00:46:35 when you talk with people and people say, yeah,
00:46:35 --> 00:46:39 I like cinema, you know, I like, I don't know,
00:46:39 --> 00:46:41 it has happened around in many situations. I
00:46:41 --> 00:46:46 like cinema. And then you try to get to, oh,
00:46:46 --> 00:46:51 what is the last movie? No, not in a way like
00:46:51 --> 00:46:56 I'm trying to, for them to take a test. Like,
00:46:56 --> 00:46:59 oh, are you really a cinema? Let's see it. No,
00:46:59 --> 00:47:01 no, no. Pure interest. Yeah. Oh, what did you,
00:47:01 --> 00:47:05 what have you seen lately? Well, I don't really
00:47:05 --> 00:47:09 go to cinema that much. Yeah. And they say whatever
00:47:09 --> 00:47:12 random movie that wanting to be and it's like
00:47:12 --> 00:47:18 the most vanilla. Yeah. And things like that.
00:47:18 --> 00:47:23 Okay. Okay. So you like cinema in that way. Okay.
00:47:23 --> 00:47:26 Not what I was looking for. And especially not
00:47:26 --> 00:47:29 horror. Not horror. Many times I have to go to
00:47:29 --> 00:47:34 cinema on my own because, yeah, I don't have
00:47:34 --> 00:47:37 many people. Which is what I'm assuming that
00:47:37 --> 00:47:41 you decided to become a podcaster. It's the easiest
00:47:41 --> 00:47:43 way to get people. Meet people. Yeah. Meet people
00:47:43 --> 00:47:46 and get people to hear you. But what has surprised
00:47:46 --> 00:47:52 you of being in the horror community? Posers.
00:47:54 --> 00:48:01 I really can't get into my head the idea of someone
00:48:01 --> 00:48:07 having a big account, getting all these invitations
00:48:07 --> 00:48:12 from premieres and all these things, stealing
00:48:12 --> 00:48:15 content from smaller accounts because they don't
00:48:15 --> 00:48:18 have a fucking idea of what to post. Yeah. And
00:48:18 --> 00:48:21 I'm like... Seriously, if you don't love this,
00:48:21 --> 00:48:24 why are you doing it? I wouldn't do it if I didn't
00:48:24 --> 00:48:27 love it. I do it because I love it. That's the
00:48:27 --> 00:48:30 thing. If I get invited to watch a movie, well,
00:48:30 --> 00:48:35 great, because I'm not fucking rich. So I appreciate
00:48:35 --> 00:48:41 it. I can save some money, of course, but I would
00:48:41 --> 00:48:45 never do that. Getting invited to a movie or
00:48:45 --> 00:48:50 getting sent a DVD or whatever. In exchange of
00:48:50 --> 00:48:52 you have to talk to give a good review of this.
00:48:53 --> 00:48:59 Yeah. No, no, I won't. I've only accepted a collaboration
00:48:59 --> 00:49:03 offer, which I haven't, I didn't get anything
00:49:03 --> 00:49:06 from it, actually, because I didn't get to sell
00:49:06 --> 00:49:09 anything. But it was from the In Search of Darkness
00:49:09 --> 00:49:11 series of documentaries because they were looking
00:49:11 --> 00:49:15 for people that could talk about and promote.
00:49:15 --> 00:49:18 They were, they're going to release a new documentary.
00:49:18 --> 00:49:21 They have covered the 80s and the 90s and they're
00:49:21 --> 00:49:25 going to cover the 70s. And I promoted it. Like
00:49:25 --> 00:49:27 they offer me, how you say, like a code. I give
00:49:27 --> 00:49:30 people code. How you say this? The pre -sale
00:49:30 --> 00:49:33 of the, of the DVD and well, the Blu -ray and
00:49:33 --> 00:49:36 everything. I could get a percentage if they
00:49:36 --> 00:49:40 got it through my link. And okay, I, I did a
00:49:40 --> 00:49:44 reel and talk about it. But because I am. The
00:49:44 --> 00:49:48 first one who is going to get it. Because I like
00:49:48 --> 00:49:51 this series. I love what they have been doing
00:49:51 --> 00:49:55 with it. If I didn't, I would say, no, thank
00:49:55 --> 00:49:59 you. So if I get the chance of getting collaborations
00:49:59 --> 00:50:01 and things like that, first of all, I'm not doing
00:50:01 --> 00:50:06 it for that. But if I get it, okay, fine. Because
00:50:06 --> 00:50:08 I'm not rich and I appreciate the money, of course.
00:50:09 --> 00:50:14 And that way I can buy more of this. What I'm
00:50:14 --> 00:50:18 never going to do is lie. If I don't like a movie,
00:50:18 --> 00:50:21 I'm going to say it. I don't feel the need to
00:50:21 --> 00:50:23 be disrespectful with the work other people have
00:50:23 --> 00:50:26 done. But I'm going to say it. I'm going to say,
00:50:26 --> 00:50:29 no, I didn't like it. It wasn't my cup of tea.
00:50:29 --> 00:50:33 I don't think it's that hard to say it. And all
00:50:33 --> 00:50:35 the opposite with the others. Because if one
00:50:35 --> 00:50:41 movie is infamous for something, if it's just
00:50:41 --> 00:50:45 tagged as a bad movie, Many people just talk
00:50:45 --> 00:50:49 shit about them without watching them. And there's
00:50:49 --> 00:50:52 nothing I love more than taking one of those
00:50:52 --> 00:51:00 movies that has been dragged on dirt and everything
00:51:00 --> 00:51:06 and talk shit for years about it and say, I love
00:51:06 --> 00:51:09 this movie. You have to watch it because it's
00:51:09 --> 00:51:12 great. I love doing that. I love getting underrated
00:51:12 --> 00:51:16 gyms and talking about them. Like you said, the
00:51:16 --> 00:51:19 influencers sometimes do kill the fun in certain
00:51:19 --> 00:51:25 things. And some don't even watch a whole movie.
00:51:25 --> 00:51:28 They just watch like a 30 minute and then they
00:51:28 --> 00:51:30 go out there and they're like, oh my God, this
00:51:30 --> 00:51:33 is the best thing since, you know. For me, it's
00:51:33 --> 00:51:35 tacos and cubetas. It's just a scary smoothie
00:51:35 --> 00:51:37 of the whole tier. Yeah, and then you only watch
00:51:37 --> 00:51:39 30 minutes of it. And there's people out there
00:51:39 --> 00:51:42 that, like I said, I do trust some people's opinions,
00:51:42 --> 00:51:45 but they're not necessarily the most known. They're
00:51:45 --> 00:51:48 not necessarily the most influential. And then
00:51:48 --> 00:51:51 I'm wondering, why are not these people the ones
00:51:51 --> 00:51:55 that are representing us? But Jenny, before we
00:51:55 --> 00:51:59 wrap up, this is going to be... basically one
00:51:59 --> 00:52:02 of the first episodes of The Physical Cut that
00:52:02 --> 00:52:06 is going to be celebrating Halloween. And I do
00:52:06 --> 00:52:10 have a few Halloween questions for you. Right.
00:52:11 --> 00:52:14 To begin with, what was your favorite Halloween
00:52:14 --> 00:52:19 movie? I'm between two. Well, Halloween, do you
00:52:19 --> 00:52:22 mean from the... Halloween in general. Ah, Halloween
00:52:22 --> 00:52:27 in general. Okay. The moment of the holiday.
00:52:28 --> 00:52:32 Okay, can I say three? Just name them. I would
00:52:32 --> 00:52:36 say The Cabin in the Woods. Oh, okay. It's amazing.
00:52:36 --> 00:52:39 It's amazing. It has everything. Trick or Treat.
00:52:40 --> 00:52:43 That one's good, too. Great anthology. And Halloween
00:52:43 --> 00:52:47 Trick. Oh, yeah. It's the vibes of the films.
00:52:47 --> 00:52:51 But I just love the aesthetic of Halloween. Just
00:52:51 --> 00:52:53 the movies. All of them, even the bad ones, they
00:52:53 --> 00:52:57 have great Halloween atmosphere. What is the
00:52:57 --> 00:53:00 best Spanish horror movie to watch on Halloween?
00:53:00 --> 00:53:03 I think maybe Wreck. I'm going to go with Wreck
00:53:03 --> 00:53:08 again because it's amazing. It's electric. It's
00:53:08 --> 00:53:11 such a fun, but also scary. It has everything
00:53:11 --> 00:53:16 on it. It's perfect. The thing is, it is a great,
00:53:16 --> 00:53:19 and it's like a great opportunity if you kind
00:53:19 --> 00:53:23 of have a Halloween party or something or get
00:53:23 --> 00:53:25 together with your friends. Especially if someone
00:53:25 --> 00:53:29 hasn't watched it yet, to just play it. The whole
00:53:29 --> 00:53:33 room like dark, lights out, lights completely
00:53:33 --> 00:53:37 out and just enjoy the experience. I think, yeah,
00:53:37 --> 00:53:39 Greg is going to be. What do you think is the
00:53:39 --> 00:53:44 most underrated horror movie? Wow. There are
00:53:44 --> 00:53:48 many. Lately, I have been talking with my co
00:53:48 --> 00:53:51 -host from the other podcast I have that is called
00:53:51 --> 00:53:53 The Little... El pequeño podcast de los horrores,
00:53:54 --> 00:53:57 the little podcast of horrors. We've been talking
00:53:57 --> 00:54:02 about doing a Dark Castle special. All the movies
00:54:02 --> 00:54:05 that this production company released because
00:54:05 --> 00:54:09 they are very underrated. And today I'm going
00:54:09 --> 00:54:14 to go with Ghost Ship. Oh, I love Ghost Ship.
00:54:14 --> 00:54:18 That movie made me cry. That and 13 Ghosts, the
00:54:18 --> 00:54:20 remake. People were scared. They were scared
00:54:20 --> 00:54:23 in the theater and I was like tearing up. And
00:54:23 --> 00:54:25 people were like, why? Why are you crying? I
00:54:25 --> 00:54:27 was like, what? Are you telling me like this
00:54:27 --> 00:54:30 poor ghost, you know, being trapped in here and
00:54:30 --> 00:54:34 doesn't make you feel bad? But I feel like with,
00:54:34 --> 00:54:37 you know, without spoiling 13 Ghosts, I feel
00:54:37 --> 00:54:41 like the Matthew Lillard scene at the end is
00:54:41 --> 00:54:44 so heartbreaking. And I was like, how are you
00:54:44 --> 00:54:48 not crying? How are you not crying for it? And
00:54:48 --> 00:54:51 it's so touching. And then with Ghost Ship, obviously
00:54:51 --> 00:54:53 it's like, you know, the final scene. I feel
00:54:53 --> 00:54:55 like the final scenes are so good in those movies.
00:54:55 --> 00:54:58 You have the final scene in Ghost Ship 2 that
00:54:58 --> 00:55:01 is so underrated. That movie is very underrated.
00:55:02 --> 00:55:05 I think the main problem it has is like it has
00:55:05 --> 00:55:10 such brutal start. The first scene of the movie
00:55:10 --> 00:55:15 is so good. that the rest doesn't live up to
00:55:15 --> 00:55:18 that start. But it's good. It's good, though.
00:55:19 --> 00:55:22 I don't get why people say it's bad. I wasn't
00:55:22 --> 00:55:24 expecting that at the beginning. When I first
00:55:24 --> 00:55:27 saw Iron and Steelers, I did not expect that.
00:55:27 --> 00:55:32 And I was like, wow. But I did see 13 Ghosts.
00:55:32 --> 00:55:35 I think it came out before Ghost Ship. So I already
00:55:35 --> 00:55:39 knew about the production company. But what's
00:55:39 --> 00:55:41 that horror movie that you think everyone should
00:55:41 --> 00:55:47 watch? Maybe Alien. I hate Aliens. I'm not a
00:55:47 --> 00:55:51 fan of Aliens. I know it's controversial. I don't
00:55:51 --> 00:55:54 like Alien. I had the first one. I bought Aliens,
00:55:54 --> 00:55:57 the second part. I returned it because I forgot
00:55:57 --> 00:56:00 how much I didn't like it. I haven't seen the
00:56:00 --> 00:56:02 other ones in between because I don't care. I
00:56:02 --> 00:56:05 went to see Romulus because I was like, let me
00:56:05 --> 00:56:07 get this a chance. Oh, Romulus is great. And
00:56:07 --> 00:56:10 I didn't like it. I was like, oh God. But I feel
00:56:10 --> 00:56:13 like it's just... It's just, I don't know. You're
00:56:13 --> 00:56:16 going to make it sad. And the funny thing is
00:56:16 --> 00:56:18 that I like, I think it's just, I don't like
00:56:18 --> 00:56:21 the characters around. Isn't it like Ripley?
00:56:21 --> 00:56:23 No, I like Ripley. That's the thing. I just don't
00:56:23 --> 00:56:25 like everybody else. I just feel like everybody
00:56:25 --> 00:56:29 else. They're spendable. Yeah. If it was just
00:56:29 --> 00:56:33 her, the cat, and the queen element, I would
00:56:33 --> 00:56:36 definitely be more into the movie. But I feel
00:56:36 --> 00:56:38 like everybody else around it kind of bothers
00:56:38 --> 00:56:41 me. But I do love Cabin in the Woods, the one
00:56:41 --> 00:56:44 that you mentioned too. I love the whole game,
00:56:45 --> 00:56:48 the whole... It's like, I prefer that than Evil
00:56:48 --> 00:56:51 Dead, the original and the remake. I didn't like
00:56:51 --> 00:56:53 the remake because I feel like the remake was
00:56:53 --> 00:56:55 just more like... I have to rewatch it. I didn't
00:56:55 --> 00:56:58 like it that much when I watched it the first
00:56:58 --> 00:57:02 time, the remake, but I still think I own it.
00:57:02 --> 00:57:05 Rewatch. Yeah, I feel like it was just more like...
00:57:05 --> 00:57:07 blood and gore and i feel like the first one
00:57:07 --> 00:57:11 even though it was gory yeah but i feel like
00:57:11 --> 00:57:13 the first one at least was comedy i feel like
00:57:13 --> 00:57:15 the second one they didn't have done i'm like
00:57:15 --> 00:57:17 if you're doing a remake at least you know bring
00:57:17 --> 00:57:19 in some of the same elements that made the first
00:57:19 --> 00:57:22 one so famous but what's that horror movie that
00:57:22 --> 00:57:26 generally scares you well the ring by gorbatsky
00:57:26 --> 00:57:31 it's quite a tough watch but i think it's you
00:57:31 --> 00:57:35 only see them what even worst I like the Japanese,
00:57:35 --> 00:57:37 the Grudge, but the Japanese, like the original.
00:57:38 --> 00:57:41 That one, oh my God, I want to get nightmares
00:57:41 --> 00:57:47 when I watch it. The new one? I couldn't, I couldn't
00:57:47 --> 00:57:52 like stare at stairs from downstairs to the upstairs.
00:57:52 --> 00:57:57 I couldn't just watch it because I, I kept getting
00:57:57 --> 00:58:02 like lashes from the movie. Like, oh, she's going
00:58:02 --> 00:58:04 to get down. upstairs and she's going to fucking
00:58:04 --> 00:58:13 kill me and yeah it is still I watched some scenes
00:58:13 --> 00:58:17 because you know some weeks ago I made a reel
00:58:17 --> 00:58:23 about it like kind of a comic relief reel but
00:58:23 --> 00:58:27 just selecting the clips I was tense the whole
00:58:27 --> 00:58:32 time watching them and like checking around me
00:58:32 --> 00:58:35 in the house and things like that. And I love
00:58:35 --> 00:58:38 that feeling. Like I have a really bad time with
00:58:38 --> 00:58:42 feeling it, but then I feel like, wow, this really
00:58:42 --> 00:58:46 got me in its time and still gets me. So it's
00:58:46 --> 00:58:49 a good movie. I haven't seen the original Yuan.
00:58:49 --> 00:58:53 I did see Rainbow. I do remember those in movie
00:58:53 --> 00:58:54 theaters. They were pretty, especially the rain.
00:58:55 --> 00:58:57 I love the rain in movie theaters. I feel like
00:58:57 --> 00:59:00 the one that really scared me as a kid, I was
00:59:00 --> 00:59:02 always in front of the exorcist because I'm Catholic.
00:59:03 --> 00:59:05 And I was like, oh, like you get too close to
00:59:05 --> 00:59:09 religion. You gotta be possessed by a demon or
00:59:09 --> 00:59:11 touched by a priest, whichever comes first. But
00:59:11 --> 00:59:16 I was more afraid. I would say of the priest.
00:59:16 --> 00:59:18 That's why I stopped going to church too much.
00:59:18 --> 00:59:20 But then I was afraid of demons. It's unlikely,
00:59:20 --> 00:59:23 right? Yeah. And I grew up around Santeria and
00:59:23 --> 00:59:26 all that kind of stuff. So I kind of always knew
00:59:26 --> 00:59:31 or had an open mind about, you know, possessions.
00:59:31 --> 00:59:35 And I was so afraid of The Exorcist. And I feel
00:59:35 --> 00:59:38 like it was something that I faced later on.
00:59:39 --> 00:59:41 And I was like, oh, you know, like this is not
00:59:41 --> 00:59:44 such a bad movie. I feel like The Exorcist 3.
00:59:44 --> 00:59:46 Even though I still watch it, it still scares
00:59:46 --> 00:59:50 me even more. I'm like, yeah, I didn't see that
00:59:50 --> 00:59:51 one until I was an adult. I remember seeing it
00:59:51 --> 00:59:54 on TV, but I was so afraid of it that I never
00:59:54 --> 00:59:56 went to watch it again. And then as an adult,
00:59:56 --> 00:59:58 I started seeing it over and over. And that's
00:59:58 --> 01:00:01 probably my favorite Exorcist movie. But the
01:00:01 --> 01:00:04 one that really traumatized me, there was Night
01:00:04 --> 01:00:06 of the Demons. But I think it was Night of the
01:00:06 --> 01:00:10 Demons 2 because I remember re -watching it recently.
01:00:10 --> 01:00:13 Oh my God, what's this one? The one with Angelica
01:00:13 --> 01:00:16 that she has the Halloween party. Yes. None of
01:00:16 --> 01:00:20 the demons. I haven't watched it yet. I haven't
01:00:20 --> 01:00:23 watched it yet. That movie traumatized me as
01:00:23 --> 01:00:27 a kid. We had a babysitter. And she had a friend
01:00:27 --> 01:00:30 over. He wasn't her boyfriend, but he wanted
01:00:30 --> 01:00:33 to hook up with her. But she was rather impressive.
01:00:33 --> 01:00:37 She rented None of the Demons 1 and 2. And I
01:00:37 --> 01:00:39 was like, this is not suitable for children.
01:00:39 --> 01:00:42 I was a kid. And my sister was like five or four
01:00:42 --> 01:00:45 years old. I remember watching it and the lipstick
01:00:45 --> 01:00:48 part in the first one, I was like, oh, my God.
01:00:48 --> 01:00:51 And then I think it's in the second part. It
01:00:51 --> 01:00:53 might be a different movie because after that,
01:00:53 --> 01:00:57 I also watched Creepshow and all that. There's
01:00:57 --> 01:01:00 a scene where a tongue comes out of the toilet
01:01:00 --> 01:01:06 and I could not sit down in the toilet for months.
01:01:06 --> 01:01:09 I was so afraid of the toilet. And I would like
01:01:09 --> 01:01:12 look down. I would be looking down at the toilet.
01:01:12 --> 01:01:14 Every time I went, I was like so afraid to go
01:01:14 --> 01:01:17 to the bathroom. That reminds me. It's so bad.
01:01:18 --> 01:01:21 I don't know if you've watched the ABCs of death.
01:01:21 --> 01:01:23 Oh, I haven't. I know the movie. I haven't seen
01:01:23 --> 01:01:26 the ABCs of death. Okay. Look for the segment
01:01:26 --> 01:01:31 called tea is for toilet. Amazing. Amazing. I
01:01:31 --> 01:01:33 already have a bad time in the toilet. I don't
01:01:33 --> 01:01:37 need another one. It's actually a kid who is
01:01:37 --> 01:01:40 terrified of going to the toilet. It is your
01:01:40 --> 01:01:43 story, maybe. Yeah, I'm following it. Maybe Lee
01:01:43 --> 01:01:45 Harcastle got it from you. Yeah, I'm going to
01:01:45 --> 01:01:47 find out who that person is who directed that
01:01:47 --> 01:01:50 movie then or wrote it. Maybe I talked to you
01:01:50 --> 01:01:53 once and now you remember me. Could be, could
01:01:53 --> 01:01:56 be. Jenny, before we go, I have one final question.
01:02:05 --> 01:02:15 We are celebrating also, besides Halloween. We
01:02:15 --> 01:02:19 are celebrating the anniversary of Scream. It's
01:02:19 --> 01:02:22 30 years. And I wanted to ask you, I sent you
01:02:22 --> 01:02:24 a few questions that I want that point of view
01:02:24 --> 01:02:28 of you growing up in Spain. How was Scream? How
01:02:28 --> 01:02:30 was the fandom? If there's any over there, when
01:02:30 --> 01:02:35 did you first see Scream? Actually, I watched
01:02:35 --> 01:02:39 it when I was a teenager. So I don't think there
01:02:39 --> 01:02:43 was such a big, at least around where I live.
01:02:43 --> 01:02:46 Of course, everyone knows like masks and everything.
01:02:46 --> 01:02:50 And you will see that. Well, not Halloween because
01:02:50 --> 01:02:55 Halloween hasn't been celebrated here till recently.
01:02:55 --> 01:03:01 But I remember watching it at home. I don't know
01:03:01 --> 01:03:07 if I got it on TV or if I downloaded it. I really
01:03:07 --> 01:03:12 don't remember. But I love it. And then, of course,
01:03:12 --> 01:03:15 I watched the first one and I had to watch the
01:03:15 --> 01:03:20 second one. And then later on the third, which
01:03:20 --> 01:03:26 didn't like so much. Nowadays, I find it cute.
01:03:27 --> 01:03:31 Funny, kind of funny, we can say. But yeah, the
01:03:31 --> 01:03:35 first one and the second one are the best. What
01:03:35 --> 01:03:38 was your first thought of when at least like
01:03:38 --> 01:03:41 watching the first one? The one that started
01:03:41 --> 01:03:43 it all. Well, I was really shocked by the ending.
01:03:43 --> 01:03:47 I didn't expect that ending at all. Because I
01:03:47 --> 01:03:50 think like Wyndham and Crabbe played very well
01:03:50 --> 01:03:53 with, you know, like leaving you one way, then
01:03:53 --> 01:03:58 the other. They played with you in a way that
01:03:58 --> 01:04:01 is really fun and don't make you feel stupid
01:04:01 --> 01:04:04 at all. Because there are older movies where
01:04:04 --> 01:04:07 they kind of do that. They trick you. And then
01:04:07 --> 01:04:10 they do another thing like, ha, I got you. And
01:04:10 --> 01:04:13 you're like, where did you get this from? Yeah.
01:04:14 --> 01:04:17 But I don't think it's the case. I think they
01:04:17 --> 01:04:21 played well. And once you get to the end, you're
01:04:21 --> 01:04:25 like, well, you got me well. I'm thankful they
01:04:25 --> 01:04:30 did it right. Maybe what I love the most about
01:04:30 --> 01:04:34 it is the meta element, the constant reference,
01:04:35 --> 01:04:39 the character of Randy. It has always been my
01:04:39 --> 01:04:43 favorite, of course. The horror connoisseur.
01:04:44 --> 01:04:47 He's the one that... Well, I want to make friends
01:04:47 --> 01:04:50 with this guy, seriously. I know. We need more
01:04:50 --> 01:04:52 people like that in the horror community that
01:04:52 --> 01:04:57 are more, I would say, an encyclopedia of horror.
01:04:58 --> 01:05:00 Because he really was an encyclopedia of horror.
01:05:01 --> 01:05:03 When it comes to the movies, it's true, they're
01:05:03 --> 01:05:08 very meta. They kind of came out, and said many
01:05:08 --> 01:05:10 times before, that it came out when it was a
01:05:10 --> 01:05:14 horror slump over here in the U .S. You had some
01:05:14 --> 01:05:17 remakes. A lot of the movies in the 80s, a lot
01:05:17 --> 01:05:19 of the horror movies in the 80s, became kind
01:05:19 --> 01:05:24 of cult classic over here. weren't probably as
01:05:24 --> 01:05:26 big as the one in the 90s. And even though the
01:05:26 --> 01:05:28 ones in the 90s, like I still know what you did
01:05:28 --> 01:05:31 last summer, it was a flop. And a lot of these
01:05:31 --> 01:05:33 movies were a flop, but then they kind of like
01:05:33 --> 01:05:36 week two or week three started making more money.
01:05:36 --> 01:05:38 And hopefully that screen came out in Christmas.
01:05:41 --> 01:05:44 So you can say it's a Christmas movie. So the
01:05:44 --> 01:05:47 friend that I made money after, you know, a few
01:05:47 --> 01:05:49 weeks after, yeah, no shit. It came out on Christmas.
01:05:49 --> 01:05:51 They want to go see Tim Allen in the Santa Claus.
01:05:51 --> 01:05:57 Now they don't want to go see Screamed. I mean,
01:05:57 --> 01:05:58 I do love both though. Now that they came out
01:05:58 --> 01:06:01 the same year, I don't think. I do love Tim Allen
01:06:01 --> 01:06:04 in the Santa Claus. The first movie. The second
01:06:04 --> 01:06:07 one, okay. Then they kind of fuck it up. I mean,
01:06:07 --> 01:06:10 the fact that you have a horror movie in the
01:06:10 --> 01:06:13 90s coming out during Christmas time, now it's
01:06:13 --> 01:06:17 more... You can see it more normal now. I feel
01:06:17 --> 01:06:20 like you can put a horror movie in Christmas
01:06:20 --> 01:06:23 and people are like, yeah, we're so sanitized.
01:06:23 --> 01:06:26 We're more open to accepting a horror movie in
01:06:26 --> 01:06:29 Christmas this time around than back in the 90s.
01:06:29 --> 01:06:31 But I like the point of view that they take.
01:06:31 --> 01:06:34 It'll make you feel stupid. And you're kind of
01:06:34 --> 01:06:37 sometimes in on the joke too. You're kind of
01:06:37 --> 01:06:40 part of the joke. I like the guess who. It keeps
01:06:40 --> 01:06:42 you guessing who it might be, who it might not
01:06:42 --> 01:06:46 be. You had that playfulness of the movie. Also
01:06:46 --> 01:06:48 the fact that they still make fun of other horror
01:06:48 --> 01:06:52 movies. Yeah. Well, thank you so much, Jenny,
01:06:52 --> 01:06:55 for being here with me today. Before we go, just
01:06:55 --> 01:06:57 please let our listeners know where they can
01:06:57 --> 01:06:59 find you, where they can listen to your podcast.
01:07:00 --> 01:07:03 And I will be linking all your information here
01:07:03 --> 01:07:05 below. So everyone can go ahead and check your
01:07:05 --> 01:07:10 podcast and your website out. mostly on Instagram
01:07:10 --> 01:07:15 at Jenny from the Crypt. The podcast, we have
01:07:15 --> 01:07:18 taken a little break from the one with my sister
01:07:18 --> 01:07:20 because she's quite busy right now. We should
01:07:20 --> 01:07:24 be preparing the next one. We are going to talk
01:07:24 --> 01:07:28 probably about video games and ADHD, obviously
01:07:28 --> 01:07:32 focusing on horror video games. You can listen
01:07:32 --> 01:07:36 to our previous episodes in Spanish. Sorry, not
01:07:36 --> 01:07:39 in English. But if you know Spanish, you can
01:07:39 --> 01:07:44 listen to us in Spotify and YouTube as well.
01:07:45 --> 01:07:49 You can look for TDA, Un Terror con Déficit de
01:07:49 --> 01:07:53 Atención. And then I also have another podcast
01:07:53 --> 01:07:58 that is coming out weekly or every two weeks,
01:07:58 --> 01:08:02 and it's called El Pequeño Podcast de los Horrores,
01:08:02 --> 01:08:07 The Little Podcast of Horrors. that I run with
01:08:07 --> 01:08:11 my co -host, Kevin. And what we do is a little
01:08:11 --> 01:08:14 review of horror news, like news related with
01:08:14 --> 01:08:20 the horror world from every week. Then we talk
01:08:20 --> 01:08:24 a bit about recommendations we want to share
01:08:24 --> 01:08:28 with our listeners. We have kind of a challenge
01:08:28 --> 01:08:31 during us too. In every episode, I recommend
01:08:31 --> 01:08:35 him a movie he hasn't watched and he... Recommends
01:08:35 --> 01:08:37 me one I haven't watched and then we discuss
01:08:37 --> 01:08:42 them in the next episode. And then we finish
01:08:42 --> 01:08:45 every episode with a talk about a horror topic.
01:08:46 --> 01:08:52 We have just started a series talking about the
01:08:52 --> 01:08:56 90s horror. We are going to... We started with
01:08:56 --> 01:08:59 my year, the year I was born, 1990. And then
01:08:59 --> 01:09:03 we are going to... We talk about our... favorite
01:09:03 --> 01:09:05 horror movies from that year. And we just make
01:09:05 --> 01:09:08 a quick review of the things that got released
01:09:08 --> 01:09:10 during that year, talk about if we have watched
01:09:10 --> 01:09:14 them, if they're in our watch list or what we
01:09:14 --> 01:09:18 expect from them. And we intend to do that for
01:09:18 --> 01:09:23 every year until we reach 1999. And then we will
01:09:23 --> 01:09:27 see if we continue with the 2000s or if we go
01:09:27 --> 01:09:31 back to the 80s. We'll see how it goes. Okay,
01:09:31 --> 01:09:35 that does sound interesting. But also you have
01:09:35 --> 01:09:38 on your Instagram, you do have your stories.
01:09:38 --> 01:09:41 They do have subtitles too. So you also post
01:09:41 --> 01:09:45 a lot. Oh yes, my reels. So if anybody follows
01:09:45 --> 01:09:47 you there, even if they can't understand the
01:09:47 --> 01:09:50 podcast, they can support you over here on Instagram
01:09:50 --> 01:09:52 because they do post their reels with English.
01:09:52 --> 01:09:54 Sometimes I watch them in mute because I don't
01:09:54 --> 01:09:57 have sound on my phone on. So I'm just reading
01:09:57 --> 01:10:01 the subtitles on Mike. Is this in English? But
01:10:01 --> 01:10:03 yeah, they can definitely check you out over
01:10:03 --> 01:10:05 there on Instagram as well. But thank you so
01:10:05 --> 01:10:07 much, Janet, for being here with me. I hope we
01:10:07 --> 01:10:10 get to speak again. I did have a great time.
01:10:10 --> 01:10:12 Don't forget, you can follow us on Instagram
01:10:12 --> 01:10:15 at The Physical Cut Pod. And you can also follow
01:10:15 --> 01:10:20 us on krpodlab .com. That's krpodlab .com. Thank
01:10:20 --> 01:10:22 you so much for listening to The Physical Cut,
01:10:23 --> 01:10:24 where films should be on the screen. I'll see
01:10:24 --> 01:10:25 you guys next time.
