The Criterion Collection July Sale is one of the best times of the year to add new films to your shelf, and in this episode I’m sharing ten releases I think are absolutely worth picking up.
These aren’t ranked, and they aren’t necessarily the “greatest” films in the collection. They’re simply ten editions I return to, recommend often, and believe offer something special. Whether it’s the film itself, the restoration, the supplements, or the overall package.
From overlooked horror classics and unforgettable international cinema to modern masterpieces and a few hidden gems, these are the Criterion releases I’d point collectors toward during this year’s sale.
I also wrap up the episode by sharing the Criterion titles I picked up during the sale and the releases I’m still considering before the month ends.
Featured Films:
- The Innocents
- Portrait of a Lady on Fire
- La Haine
- Anatomy of a Fall
- The Worst Person in the World

00:00:00 --> 00:00:03 I'm getting a lot of hate on Reddit for my 10
00:00:03 --> 00:00:08 criterion recommendations. And I honestly don't
00:00:08 --> 00:00:24 give a f - Welcome back to the physical cut where
00:00:24 --> 00:00:27 films live beyond the stream. My name is Carlos.
00:00:27 --> 00:00:30 The Criterion July sale is finally here and if
00:00:30 --> 00:00:33 you're anything like me, you probably had already
00:00:33 --> 00:00:36 a wish list for weeks. Whether you're buying
00:00:36 --> 00:00:39 your first Criterion release or looking to add
00:00:39 --> 00:00:42 a few more titles to an already overflowing shelf
00:00:42 --> 00:00:45 like most of us have, this is one of the best
00:00:45 --> 00:00:50 times of the year to pick up some of these titles.
00:00:50 --> 00:00:52 So in this episode, I'm sharing 10 Criterion
00:00:52 --> 00:00:56 releases that I think are absolutely worth grabbing
00:00:56 --> 00:00:59 during the sale. These are not necessarily best
00:00:59 --> 00:01:02 films in the collection, at least to me they
00:01:02 --> 00:01:05 are, and they're definitely not ranked. So they're
00:01:05 --> 00:01:08 just going to be totally random. There's simply
00:01:08 --> 00:01:13 10 additions I love. I always recommend and think
00:01:13 --> 00:01:16 offer something special, whether it's the film
00:01:16 --> 00:01:19 itself, the restoration or everything packed
00:01:19 --> 00:01:23 into the release. So let's get into it. Let's
00:01:23 --> 00:01:28 start off with one of my I would say horror favorites
00:01:28 --> 00:01:33 and That is the innocence. I don't know if you
00:01:33 --> 00:01:36 guys are aware of this film But this is a beautiful
00:01:36 --> 00:01:40 black and white film. It's directed by Jay Clayton
00:01:40 --> 00:01:43 It's probably the only film that I've seen from
00:01:43 --> 00:01:46 Deborah Kerr. I'm not too sure on that Don't
00:01:46 --> 00:01:49 hold that against me, but I think it is it's
00:01:49 --> 00:01:52 an adaptation of the turn of the screw It's co
00:01:52 --> 00:01:55 -written by Truman Capote. This film is only
00:01:55 --> 00:01:58 a Blu -ray. It's a 4K digital restoration. So
00:01:58 --> 00:02:01 I can only imagine how beautiful this film would
00:02:01 --> 00:02:06 look once it is upgraded to 4K. Honestly, this
00:02:06 --> 00:02:09 is probably one of the most underrated horror
00:02:09 --> 00:02:12 gems that The Criterion Collection has. I do
00:02:12 --> 00:02:16 like The Uninvited. The Uninvited has somewhat
00:02:16 --> 00:02:20 of a similar feeling to this. I do find that
00:02:20 --> 00:02:22 one a little bit more boring though. This one,
00:02:22 --> 00:02:25 the kids. Do you give me anything with kids that
00:02:25 --> 00:02:29 totally already creeps me out? But the kids in
00:02:29 --> 00:02:33 this film, they act like such adults. Honestly,
00:02:33 --> 00:02:35 that is probably one of the creepiest kids I've
00:02:35 --> 00:02:37 ever seen in film, especially that little boy.
00:02:38 --> 00:02:41 The fact that he can act like an adult is even
00:02:41 --> 00:02:44 more unsettling. I would probably put this next
00:02:44 --> 00:02:46 to The Others. The Others, obviously, it is a
00:02:46 --> 00:02:52 great film, but this one being from 1961, The
00:02:52 --> 00:02:55 picture quality and the sound in this and again
00:02:55 --> 00:03:00 This is just a basic blu -ray from a 4k restoration
00:03:00 --> 00:03:04 digital restoration It's a monorail sound and
00:03:04 --> 00:03:08 it already sounds pretty amazing So imagine this
00:03:08 --> 00:03:12 with a 5 .1 DTS. This would definitely freak
00:03:12 --> 00:03:15 me out even more Honestly, if you are new to
00:03:15 --> 00:03:18 the criterion collection and you have not heard
00:03:18 --> 00:03:21 of The Innocence, I would say please put that
00:03:21 --> 00:03:24 on top of your list because it is a must -own.
00:03:24 --> 00:03:28 It is a great gothic film, way better than Rebecca.
00:03:29 --> 00:03:33 So that said, that is one you should definitely
00:03:33 --> 00:03:36 put in your list this summer. If not, just wait
00:03:36 --> 00:03:38 till November. If you want to try to focus on
00:03:38 --> 00:03:41 new titles this month, because I know we've had
00:03:41 --> 00:03:44 at least June... was a big month for titles.
00:03:45 --> 00:03:48 I was not too eager to buy anything else, which
00:03:48 --> 00:03:49 I'm going to be talking about at the end of this
00:03:49 --> 00:03:52 episode. But I feel like this year for me, it
00:03:52 --> 00:03:55 wasn't too exciting for Criterion. I wasn't too
00:03:55 --> 00:03:58 excited for a lot of their releases, but that's
00:03:58 --> 00:04:01 just me. Moving on to the next title, number
00:04:01 --> 00:04:05 two, I got Portrait of a Lady on Fire. I know,
00:04:06 --> 00:04:08 don't hate me, but I'm going to be double dipping
00:04:08 --> 00:04:12 on this because there's a Korsan edition coming
00:04:12 --> 00:04:16 out. And this is probably one of the best films
00:04:16 --> 00:04:22 Criterion has, current films. This is from 2019
00:04:22 --> 00:04:25 and this is also a 4K digital master. And this
00:04:25 --> 00:04:29 one does have a 5 .1 surround sound DTS HD master
00:04:29 --> 00:04:32 audio, which I'm a big fan of. But this one,
00:04:32 --> 00:04:34 the colors, this is just a beautiful film. This
00:04:34 --> 00:04:37 is a painting brought to life. And I know a lot
00:04:37 --> 00:04:40 of films. tend to be named that when they're
00:04:40 --> 00:04:43 basically about a painter. But this this film
00:04:43 --> 00:04:48 is such a beauty. It's a lesbian love story.
00:04:48 --> 00:04:51 It's by Celine Sciamma. And I recommend this
00:04:51 --> 00:04:54 film every year and not just for Pride Month.
00:04:55 --> 00:04:57 I don't think I reposted it this year for Pride
00:04:57 --> 00:04:59 Month, but I usually recommend this film a lot,
00:04:59 --> 00:05:04 not just because it's a rare, I would say beautiful
00:05:04 --> 00:05:07 lesbian love story. Although heartbreaking. I
00:05:07 --> 00:05:10 mean that final scene is just probably one of
00:05:10 --> 00:05:12 the most heartbreaking scenes I've seen in cinema
00:05:12 --> 00:05:15 and in years the film itself is just breathtaking
00:05:15 --> 00:05:20 and I can only see this in 4k I'm not gonna get
00:05:20 --> 00:05:23 too excited because I just went through big letdown
00:05:23 --> 00:05:26 with a film that I thought would look great on
00:05:26 --> 00:05:30 4k from shout Studios and that was a big letdown.
00:05:30 --> 00:05:34 I do trust course on more than shout. So that
00:05:34 --> 00:05:38 said Know that the fire scenes the night scenes
00:05:38 --> 00:05:41 in this film are gonna look amazing I'm getting
00:05:41 --> 00:05:44 my hopes up a little bit too much But I know
00:05:44 --> 00:05:46 criteria is gonna put this out on 4k. They copy
00:05:46 --> 00:05:49 paste a lot of stuff I don't want to get too
00:05:49 --> 00:05:52 much hate on that But they do and if course on
00:05:52 --> 00:05:54 is putting this on 4k most likely criteria is
00:05:54 --> 00:05:58 gonna bring out a 4k of this Pretty soon probably
00:05:58 --> 00:06:01 next year. So if you were more of a criterion
00:06:01 --> 00:06:04 collector and you don't look to the side because
00:06:04 --> 00:06:06 you don't want to cheat on them, then that's
00:06:06 --> 00:06:08 great. Stick to the 4K, they're probably going
00:06:08 --> 00:06:11 to be popping out soon, but if you can get your
00:06:11 --> 00:06:13 hands on that Coruscant, go ahead. The Blu -ray
00:06:13 --> 00:06:18 itself looks beautiful, but it is a must have.
00:06:18 --> 00:06:21 Criterion does have a lot of LGBTQ titles. I
00:06:21 --> 00:06:24 actually have two, probably three on this list,
00:06:24 --> 00:06:27 but this is definitely one that you must have
00:06:27 --> 00:06:29 on your shelf. The third film that I'm going
00:06:29 --> 00:06:32 to be recommending to you, this one, A lot of
00:06:32 --> 00:06:35 us know, not just from Criterion, just in general,
00:06:35 --> 00:06:39 it is a groundbreaking. This is probably one
00:06:39 --> 00:06:42 of the films that I shook us after I finished
00:06:42 --> 00:06:46 watching. I could not move after I finished watching
00:06:46 --> 00:06:50 this film. And it is black and white. It is from
00:06:50 --> 00:06:56 1995. And that is La Aime. This is a 4K digital
00:06:56 --> 00:06:58 master. I'm actually waiting for the 4K on this
00:06:58 --> 00:07:01 too. I'm pretty sure either Studio Canal is going
00:07:01 --> 00:07:04 to pop this one out or Coruscant. I know this
00:07:04 --> 00:07:07 is coming and this is another one that I need
00:07:07 --> 00:07:11 on a 4K restoration. Not some digital master.
00:07:11 --> 00:07:16 This also has a DTS HD master audio 5 .1. It
00:07:16 --> 00:07:18 does sound pretty great. It is French I know
00:07:18 --> 00:07:20 some people don't like reading subtitles if that's
00:07:20 --> 00:07:22 the case, you shouldn't be collecting criterion.
00:07:22 --> 00:07:25 It's not an action film It's really not an action
00:07:25 --> 00:07:27 film, but it's action packed is so unsettling
00:07:27 --> 00:07:31 You have three kids that go through hell during
00:07:31 --> 00:07:34 the riots that were happening in France back
00:07:34 --> 00:07:38 in the nineties. And I mean, just the ending
00:07:38 --> 00:07:41 itself is so unsettling. This is honestly a film
00:07:41 --> 00:07:45 that I can only describe as a modern Odyssey.
00:07:46 --> 00:07:50 It is really about an identity crisis of a nation.
00:07:50 --> 00:07:53 And you see that reflected throughout the entire
00:07:53 --> 00:07:58 film from police brutality. It just keeps you
00:07:58 --> 00:08:02 on an unnerving edge at all times. The next thing
00:08:02 --> 00:08:04 I could probably compare this film to is that
00:08:04 --> 00:08:08 little ticking clock that you hear in Don Kirk
00:08:08 --> 00:08:12 that is unsettling. That's probably how I can
00:08:12 --> 00:08:14 compare this film to but this is such a beautiful
00:08:14 --> 00:08:17 film. This was a blind buy for me. I went into
00:08:17 --> 00:08:21 this film not knowing anything and again I feel
00:08:21 --> 00:08:23 like that's probably why I was so unsettled towards
00:08:23 --> 00:08:27 the end. It grabbed me by the throat and I don't
00:08:27 --> 00:08:29 think I was able to breathe by the end of that
00:08:29 --> 00:08:31 film. And honestly, that's a film that I have
00:08:31 --> 00:08:34 to watch at least once a year. It kind of does
00:08:34 --> 00:08:37 suck because it's a big mirror to our society
00:08:37 --> 00:08:41 today. Number four, I have to say, another film
00:08:41 --> 00:08:44 that I came out of the theater shaking. This
00:08:44 --> 00:08:48 one's more recent, 2023. I can only say good
00:08:48 --> 00:08:51 things about this film, but it's because when
00:08:51 --> 00:08:54 I exited the theater, There was only one thing
00:08:54 --> 00:08:56 that I was thinking about and it wasn't even
00:08:56 --> 00:09:01 the film itself. It was the screenplay of This
00:09:01 --> 00:09:03 film I knew from the moment I walked out that
00:09:03 --> 00:09:07 this was gonna win best Screenplay at the Oscars
00:09:07 --> 00:09:10 because there was nothing better out that year.
00:09:11 --> 00:09:13 There was good films out Don't get me wrong just
00:09:13 --> 00:09:17 not great screenplays, but this one is Anatomy
00:09:17 --> 00:09:20 of a Fall I know this is a popular film, but
00:09:20 --> 00:09:23 a lot of criterion collectors might not have
00:09:23 --> 00:09:25 it just because they have to start with Citizen
00:09:25 --> 00:09:29 Kane for those who like Citizen Kane and anatomy
00:09:29 --> 00:09:31 of a murder. That's usually the anatomy they
00:09:31 --> 00:09:34 go for because every time they go on a YouTube
00:09:34 --> 00:09:37 channel and they give them the 10 best criterions
00:09:37 --> 00:09:41 you must own, it's always the old ones. Not a
00:09:41 --> 00:09:43 lot of people mentioned this one. The only reason
00:09:43 --> 00:09:44 they mentioned it is because the most recent
00:09:44 --> 00:09:50 one that came out that won Oscar. But I mean,
00:09:50 --> 00:09:54 Sandra Hewler is just You can give her anything.
00:09:54 --> 00:09:56 She could play a tree and she would fucking kill
00:09:56 --> 00:10:00 it. This is all a courtroom drama. I love a courtroom
00:10:00 --> 00:10:04 drama. So if you like 12 angry men, you're going
00:10:04 --> 00:10:07 to love one angry woman because this film is
00:10:07 --> 00:10:10 a masterpiece. The way that it's shot, those
00:10:10 --> 00:10:12 films that tend to go back and forth with their
00:10:12 --> 00:10:16 storyline. I'm not a big fan of them, but in
00:10:16 --> 00:10:19 this one, it just works so well. This is a 5
00:10:19 --> 00:10:23 .1 surround DTS HD master audio. at the beginning
00:10:23 --> 00:10:27 with that loud music that's when you want to
00:10:27 --> 00:10:30 put this film to the test and it does live up
00:10:30 --> 00:10:33 to it it is a great film i highly recommend that
00:10:33 --> 00:10:36 one if you're into courtroom dramas you're definitely
00:10:36 --> 00:10:40 going to love that film another film this is
00:10:40 --> 00:10:45 number five that i honestly kind of hated at
00:10:45 --> 00:10:47 the beginning and it's not because the film is
00:10:47 --> 00:10:50 bad it's just this is a film that you can only
00:10:50 --> 00:10:53 see at one point in your life and you're either
00:10:53 --> 00:10:56 gonna like it or hate it. The first time I saw
00:10:56 --> 00:11:00 this film, this is from 2021, I didn't like it,
00:11:00 --> 00:11:03 but that's because I was in a state of mind that
00:11:03 --> 00:11:10 the main character was the villain. And then
00:11:10 --> 00:11:13 I think it was about six months later, I went
00:11:13 --> 00:11:17 again, I watched it from a different perspective.
00:11:17 --> 00:11:21 Maybe it was six months difference in my life.
00:11:21 --> 00:11:26 And I could not identify more with this character.
00:11:27 --> 00:11:31 And this is the worst person in the world by
00:11:31 --> 00:11:34 Jacquim Trier. I'm not a big fan of the last
00:11:34 --> 00:11:36 one, to be honest. Probably I'm going to have
00:11:36 --> 00:11:38 to give it another chance just the same way I
00:11:38 --> 00:11:41 had to deal with this one. But I was not a big
00:11:41 --> 00:11:44 fan of sentimental value. I haven't picked it
00:11:44 --> 00:11:46 up. I'm still debating on that. But this is a
00:11:46 --> 00:11:53 film. If you like the study of the human Identity,
00:11:53 --> 00:11:59 mind, personality. This is a film that you definitely
00:11:59 --> 00:12:03 should own. Every actor in this film just gives
00:12:03 --> 00:12:06 such a top -notch performance and you're gonna
00:12:06 --> 00:12:10 realize who the real villain is and it's not
00:12:10 --> 00:12:13 the worst person actually. To be honest she is
00:12:13 --> 00:12:16 not the worst person if you do figure out who
00:12:16 --> 00:12:20 the true villain in that movie is. You let me
00:12:20 --> 00:12:23 know and see if we agree. The next film, and
00:12:23 --> 00:12:27 I believe this is number six, it's a very short
00:12:27 --> 00:12:30 film. It's basically a mockumentary. It took
00:12:30 --> 00:12:33 me a minute to figure out that it was a mockumentary
00:12:33 --> 00:12:38 by Cheryl Dunye. And this is so well done that
00:12:38 --> 00:12:42 I honestly believed the watermelon woman was
00:12:42 --> 00:12:46 real. It took me such a long time. I honestly
00:12:46 --> 00:12:51 was invested in the story. too much to even care
00:12:51 --> 00:12:54 if the watermelon woman was real or not. It's
00:12:54 --> 00:12:58 such a beautiful film. This is what, for me,
00:12:59 --> 00:13:04 indie cinema is. This is the blood of indie cinema.
00:13:04 --> 00:13:07 And I recommend it every year. And again, I get
00:13:07 --> 00:13:11 a lot of hate for my recommendations, as I said
00:13:11 --> 00:13:14 on Reddit, but I really don't give a fuck because
00:13:14 --> 00:13:17 a lot of people don't talk about this film. The
00:13:17 --> 00:13:19 Criterion bros don't go around, a lot of them,
00:13:19 --> 00:13:21 talk about this film. They don't even promote
00:13:21 --> 00:13:24 this film on their Instagram. I follow a few
00:13:24 --> 00:13:27 of them. And for Criterion lovers, this one is
00:13:27 --> 00:13:31 always overlooked. And this is honestly, for
00:13:31 --> 00:13:36 those who are starting out as directors, as writers,
00:13:37 --> 00:13:40 I think this is a film that you can identify
00:13:40 --> 00:13:45 with. This I compare to Tangerine. You can do
00:13:45 --> 00:13:47 a double feature of this in Tangerine and you
00:13:47 --> 00:13:52 can learn so much from filmmaking. You can learn
00:13:52 --> 00:13:55 so much about filmmaking, especially if you're
00:13:55 --> 00:13:58 a black filmmaker, a queer filmmaker. This is
00:13:58 --> 00:14:01 a film that you should definitely sit down, study.
00:14:02 --> 00:14:04 I don't only love the film because it really
00:14:04 --> 00:14:07 took me by surprise not being an actual documentary.
00:14:08 --> 00:14:12 but it's also the fact that you get that 1990s
00:14:12 --> 00:14:16 video store vibe so well and it's just a gem
00:14:16 --> 00:14:18 to me this is a masterpiece this is only a 3
00:14:18 --> 00:14:22 .0 surround sound a 3 .0 surround dts hd master
00:14:22 --> 00:14:24 audio it sounds good it doesn't need it this
00:14:24 --> 00:14:26 could be mono and it's still gonna sound great
00:14:26 --> 00:14:30 it's a 2k digital restoration i do hope i do
00:14:30 --> 00:14:33 wish that somebody else would take this film
00:14:33 --> 00:14:35 i would want to see that one in a bigger and
00:14:35 --> 00:14:39 a nicer set just because again, it's such a hidden
00:14:39 --> 00:14:43 gem for me that I wish this had a nice booklet
00:14:43 --> 00:14:47 attached to it. Number seven, for those keeping
00:14:47 --> 00:14:49 track, because I'm definitely not, this film
00:14:49 --> 00:14:52 was at the bottom of my list when I first saw
00:14:52 --> 00:14:56 it. It's a David Cronenberg film. And I do love
00:14:56 --> 00:14:59 David Cronenberg. When I first saw this film,
00:14:59 --> 00:15:03 I hated it. I don't know why. I just know that
00:15:03 --> 00:15:07 I saw it. to me this was an almost three hour
00:15:07 --> 00:15:10 film when I first saw it and then I found out
00:15:10 --> 00:15:12 just recently when I was watching it there was
00:15:12 --> 00:15:18 only 96 minutes and this is a history of violence
00:15:18 --> 00:15:22 by David Cronenberg after seeing this film again
00:15:22 --> 00:15:28 I this moved up so far up my list and Still have
00:15:28 --> 00:15:30 to say video drum has to be my number one mostly
00:15:30 --> 00:15:32 because that's the first David that I saw but
00:15:32 --> 00:15:36 this might be a tie with it I still haven't seen
00:15:36 --> 00:15:38 Eastern promises a lot of people tell me that
00:15:38 --> 00:15:40 if I like this one I'm definitely gonna love
00:15:40 --> 00:15:42 Eastern promises haven't bought it because I
00:15:42 --> 00:15:45 know a 4k is definitely on the horizon So I'm
00:15:45 --> 00:15:47 holding off on that. This one is a 4k digital
00:15:47 --> 00:15:51 restoration I do have the 4k in my hand and it's
00:15:51 --> 00:15:55 a 5 .1 surround DTS HD master audio. It sounds
00:15:55 --> 00:15:57 great. Actually, it definitely sounds great.
00:15:57 --> 00:16:01 It looks great This film looks amazing. The act
00:16:01 --> 00:16:03 in this film. Maria Bello is such a good actress
00:16:03 --> 00:16:07 in this film. My God. What goes on in the stairs
00:16:07 --> 00:16:12 alone. I mean, this film is so physically draining.
00:16:12 --> 00:16:14 It doesn't have so much body horror like a lot
00:16:14 --> 00:16:18 of David Cranberg films do, but physically it's
00:16:18 --> 00:16:22 so draining. If that makes any sense. Number
00:16:22 --> 00:16:25 eight. And this is probably the best threesome
00:16:25 --> 00:16:28 film I've ever seen. A threesome doesn't happen,
00:16:29 --> 00:16:34 but it is so suggested that one should. This
00:16:34 --> 00:16:37 is from 1962, way ahead of its time. If you like
00:16:37 --> 00:16:41 Designed for Living, which that's another threesome
00:16:41 --> 00:16:43 waiting to happen. If you like that film, you're
00:16:43 --> 00:16:46 definitely going to love this one. This one is
00:16:46 --> 00:16:49 a French film, Jules at Gym. or Jules and Jim,
00:16:50 --> 00:16:52 for those who speak English. It's 106 minutes.
00:16:52 --> 00:16:54 Actually, this film is a little longer than it
00:16:54 --> 00:16:56 should be. That's the only problem that I have
00:16:56 --> 00:16:58 with this film. It's a little longer than it
00:16:58 --> 00:17:00 should be, just by like maybe 10 minutes. But
00:17:00 --> 00:17:04 this is a 2K digital film transfer, French mono
00:17:04 --> 00:17:06 sound. It sounds great, actually. It doesn't
00:17:06 --> 00:17:08 really bother me. The sound doesn't really bother
00:17:08 --> 00:17:10 me. But again, it's not a film that needs to
00:17:10 --> 00:17:14 be upgraded when it comes to the sound. It's
00:17:14 --> 00:17:16 a beautiful film. It's funny as hell. It's very
00:17:16 --> 00:17:20 uncomfortable, especially for those who have
00:17:20 --> 00:17:22 marital problems. It's a very entertaining film.
00:17:23 --> 00:17:24 The only reason I pull that one out every now
00:17:24 --> 00:17:26 and then is because I know it doesn't get a lot
00:17:26 --> 00:17:29 of talk. The box set itself is worth having in
00:17:29 --> 00:17:32 your collection. This comes in a beautiful digipack
00:17:32 --> 00:17:35 or digibox. I don't know the difference, but
00:17:35 --> 00:17:37 that is a beautiful film to have in your collection.
00:17:37 --> 00:17:39 It's probably one of my favorite French films.
00:17:40 --> 00:17:43 Besides some of the Eric Romer, but this is definitely
00:17:43 --> 00:17:45 a must -have in your collection It's a beautiful
00:17:45 --> 00:17:47 box and it's good to pick up now too because
00:17:47 --> 00:17:52 again for this $20. It's more than worth it the
00:17:52 --> 00:17:55 Second to last film that I highly recommend and
00:17:55 --> 00:17:58 this is mostly for horror lovers as well Even
00:17:58 --> 00:18:01 though it's not a horror film some might say
00:18:01 --> 00:18:07 is Boris Karloff in 1968 Targets this film is
00:18:07 --> 00:18:11 so surprising Honestly, this could have been
00:18:11 --> 00:18:15 either the most boring film or the best film
00:18:15 --> 00:18:21 ever and it was the latter. This film is so gripping.
00:18:22 --> 00:18:26 It's mostly about how we glorify violence and
00:18:26 --> 00:18:30 it just goes from zero to a hundred so fast and
00:18:30 --> 00:18:33 there's some scenes that are so unsettling mostly
00:18:33 --> 00:18:36 because of the society that we live today with
00:18:36 --> 00:18:40 gun violence. It is such a mirror. to this day
00:18:40 --> 00:18:43 about glorifying violence. Boris Karloff is probably
00:18:43 --> 00:18:45 the least entertaining thing in this film up
00:18:45 --> 00:18:49 to the very end. It is a 4K digital master. It
00:18:49 --> 00:18:52 does have also a mono sound, but it sounds pretty
00:18:52 --> 00:18:55 great. The shots and everything. It sounds pretty,
00:18:55 --> 00:18:59 pretty great. The last film I want to recommend
00:18:59 --> 00:19:02 for those who are starting out their criterion
00:19:02 --> 00:19:07 collection is from master wind vendors. No, I'm
00:19:07 --> 00:19:09 not talking about Paris, Texas. You should already
00:19:09 --> 00:19:12 have that one in your collection This one is
00:19:12 --> 00:19:19 from 2023 It is perfect days This film you have
00:19:19 --> 00:19:21 to really get into it if you don't know when
00:19:21 --> 00:19:25 vendors and you haven't seen Paris, Texas, which
00:19:25 --> 00:19:28 The colors in that film alone. I could recommend
00:19:28 --> 00:19:30 that film for the rest of my life But we're not
00:19:30 --> 00:19:32 talking about Paris, Texas because again everyone
00:19:32 --> 00:19:35 should have that one But in Perfect Days, you
00:19:35 --> 00:19:40 see the same beautiful colors. You see life in
00:19:40 --> 00:19:44 every color in Windvendor films. And this one
00:19:44 --> 00:19:49 is such a simple yet such a deep and moving film
00:19:49 --> 00:19:53 that you don't even know what is entertaining
00:19:53 --> 00:19:55 you. At least for me, when I was watching this
00:19:55 --> 00:19:58 film, The Simplicity, I think that's what was
00:19:58 --> 00:20:03 really drawing me in. And then... What the character
00:20:03 --> 00:20:09 was exposed to That made me feel for the character
00:20:09 --> 00:20:13 in different ways is a person that I don't think
00:20:13 --> 00:20:17 he shows to be in those situations But nonetheless
00:20:17 --> 00:20:21 those situations happened. He's just a simple
00:20:21 --> 00:20:25 cleaner he cleans public bathrooms and he lives
00:20:25 --> 00:20:32 a routine life and then his niece comes to visit
00:20:32 --> 00:20:36 him slowly things start changing in his routine
00:20:36 --> 00:20:39 and I would say this is a film for people who
00:20:39 --> 00:20:42 just want to sit down and contemplate on life
00:20:42 --> 00:20:45 in a different way that you don't necessarily
00:20:45 --> 00:20:50 have to be so active for life to happen to you
00:20:50 --> 00:20:53 sometimes you can just be having your routine
00:20:53 --> 00:20:56 and life just happens this is such a hard film
00:20:56 --> 00:20:58 to explain to people The best thing that I can
00:20:58 --> 00:21:00 always say to people when I recommend this film
00:21:00 --> 00:21:05 is just sit down, open up your mind to a different
00:21:05 --> 00:21:09 type of film. And this film, you're going to
00:21:09 --> 00:21:11 identify with this film no matter what kind of
00:21:11 --> 00:21:14 life you live. You can live a busy life and this
00:21:14 --> 00:21:16 film is definitely going to resonate with you.
00:21:17 --> 00:21:21 This is a beautiful 4K digital master. It's approved
00:21:21 --> 00:21:24 by VIN, is it VIN Vendors? I call them VIN Vendors
00:21:24 --> 00:21:27 because everybody does. but it does have a 5
00:21:27 --> 00:21:32 .1 surround DTS HD master audio. Honestly, you're
00:21:32 --> 00:21:35 able to appreciate the surround sound of just
00:21:35 --> 00:21:39 the city. I think that's probably where this
00:21:39 --> 00:21:42 sound works the best. When you can just sit down
00:21:42 --> 00:21:46 and take in the noise from the city, appreciate
00:21:46 --> 00:21:51 it, and take in the directing. from Vin vendors
00:21:51 --> 00:21:54 and the beautiful cinematography. His films are
00:21:54 --> 00:21:57 usually just, when it comes to cinematography,
00:21:58 --> 00:22:02 top notch. I don't think we have another director
00:22:02 --> 00:22:07 who's creating films right now with such beautiful
00:22:07 --> 00:22:10 cinematography. I mean, you can say Chloe Xiao,
00:22:11 --> 00:22:14 sure. Now, I wasn't going to talk about my pickups
00:22:14 --> 00:22:18 because I don't know yet if I'm going to be buying
00:22:18 --> 00:22:22 anything else. But I think I'm gonna wrap it
00:22:22 --> 00:22:26 up with these four titles that I got during the
00:22:26 --> 00:22:30 sale this week because I do have a big trip coming
00:22:30 --> 00:22:33 up and I don't know what else to buy to be honest
00:22:33 --> 00:22:36 from criterion everything I wanted from criterion
00:22:36 --> 00:22:39 I already got the ones that I was mostly excited
00:22:39 --> 00:22:43 for I have in my hand right now and I don't really
00:22:43 --> 00:22:47 know if I want something if I need something
00:22:47 --> 00:22:50 right now What I do need is that Kubrick set.
00:22:51 --> 00:22:55 So being poor and broke, I grabbed four titles.
00:22:55 --> 00:23:00 Obviously two are from my idol, my zaddy, John
00:23:00 --> 00:23:04 Waters. I haven't seen these yet. I just picked
00:23:04 --> 00:23:05 them up two days ago and I haven't been able
00:23:05 --> 00:23:08 to see them yet. This one's 1977, Desperate Living.
00:23:09 --> 00:23:12 It is a 4K digital restoration. When it comes
00:23:12 --> 00:23:14 to audio, it's just a mono audio. We'll see how
00:23:14 --> 00:23:17 that sounds. I hope it sounds good because sometimes
00:23:17 --> 00:23:20 some of his movies tend to sound a little low,
00:23:21 --> 00:23:24 but I am hoping this one has a beautiful picture
00:23:24 --> 00:23:27 at least. The other one, obviously Hairspray,
00:23:28 --> 00:23:30 one of my favorite John Water films right after
00:23:30 --> 00:23:34 Pecker. This one's from 1988, 4K restoration.
00:23:35 --> 00:23:38 This one's another one that I'm hoping that another
00:23:38 --> 00:23:43 UK label grabs and does a beautiful set or anybody
00:23:43 --> 00:23:46 in Australia, if you're listening, please make
00:23:46 --> 00:23:49 sure you grab this title. Make a beautiful set.
00:23:49 --> 00:23:51 I'm actually waiting for a criterion set of all
00:23:51 --> 00:23:55 these films, but I need something like Cecile
00:23:55 --> 00:23:58 B. Demented. I need something for hairspray and
00:23:58 --> 00:24:02 pecker. I need pecker. I need pecker on 4K ASAP.
00:24:02 --> 00:24:06 Please make it happen criterion. or Umbrella,
00:24:06 --> 00:24:09 whoever did, Cecil B. Demented, please make it
00:24:09 --> 00:24:12 happen. This one is a 2 .0 surround DTS HD master
00:24:12 --> 00:24:14 audio, which I'm pretty sure is going to sound
00:24:14 --> 00:24:16 great. Doesn't need that much sound anyway. Mono
00:24:16 --> 00:24:18 would have been great, but this is such a great
00:24:18 --> 00:24:21 film. So if you're a John Water fan, this is
00:24:21 --> 00:24:24 your month. Honestly, this is your sale. The
00:24:24 --> 00:24:27 other one that I got was Ernst Lubitsch Trouble
00:24:27 --> 00:24:31 in Paradise. I only have seen one more Ernst
00:24:31 --> 00:24:36 and I loved it. It's one of my Up there comedies
00:24:36 --> 00:24:39 from 30s. This one's also from 1932. This is
00:24:39 --> 00:24:44 a 4k digital restoration also mono, but if it
00:24:44 --> 00:24:47 sounds anything like his other films It should
00:24:47 --> 00:24:51 be I would say okay They don't need a better.
00:24:51 --> 00:24:53 They don't need a 2 .0 or anything like that.
00:24:53 --> 00:24:57 I think mono will be okay But this one I don't
00:24:57 --> 00:24:59 know much about I just got this as a recommendation
00:24:59 --> 00:25:02 It's love at first sight swindle when high society
00:25:02 --> 00:25:06 Steve Gaston on a skew And Pip Pocket, Lili Voltaire,
00:25:06 --> 00:25:09 Cross Path amid the canals of Venice while attempting
00:25:09 --> 00:25:12 to con each other. Great. I love those stupid
00:25:12 --> 00:25:14 ass comedies. So this one is definitely one that
00:25:14 --> 00:25:17 I have to check out ASAP. I do hope it looks
00:25:17 --> 00:25:19 good. It's black and white, so it should look
00:25:19 --> 00:25:22 good on 4K. And the last one, I also, this one
00:25:22 --> 00:25:25 was a blind buy. This one is high art. This one
00:25:25 --> 00:25:28 is only Blu -ray, but it does have a 4K digital
00:25:28 --> 00:25:31 restoration. 5 .1 surround sound. This one is,
00:25:32 --> 00:25:35 I believe this one, yeah. So this one is also
00:25:35 --> 00:25:40 a lesbian love story. Ali Shidi stars in writer
00:25:40 --> 00:25:43 -director Lisa Shalhoudenko's debut. So this
00:25:43 --> 00:25:45 one says, it's a wry and incisive look at the
00:25:45 --> 00:25:47 politics of the New York art scene wrapped in
00:25:47 --> 00:25:52 the guise of an emotionally spiky queer romance.
00:25:52 --> 00:25:55 Great. Technically I'm recording this on the
00:25:55 --> 00:25:58 last day or penultimate last day of Pride month,
00:25:58 --> 00:26:01 so I guess I got three three titles that are
00:26:01 --> 00:26:03 no not three because anything John Waters is
00:26:03 --> 00:26:06 gay as fuck So I got about five queer titles
00:26:06 --> 00:26:08 here So if you're listening to this in the last
00:26:08 --> 00:26:11 days of pride month But you should support queer
00:26:11 --> 00:26:15 art any time of the year Don't be a hypocrite
00:26:15 --> 00:26:18 like most corporations are and also I did get
00:26:18 --> 00:26:21 the little truck. It wasn't on 50 % I was hoping
00:26:21 --> 00:26:26 it was they should have had this 50 % but it's
00:26:26 --> 00:26:29 so cute it's heavy as a rock but it's cute so
00:26:29 --> 00:26:33 that is going right in front of my Bergman box
00:26:33 --> 00:26:35 set but please let me know what you are picking
00:26:35 --> 00:26:38 up during the criterion sale in July give me
00:26:38 --> 00:26:39 more recommendations tell me if I should pick
00:26:39 --> 00:26:43 up something else before the month ends. Again,
00:26:43 --> 00:26:46 I'm trying not to pick up too many titles. I
00:26:46 --> 00:26:48 still have criterions from the March flash sale
00:26:48 --> 00:26:51 that I haven't seen. I still have shit that I
00:26:51 --> 00:26:53 bought in Orlando in January that I haven't seen.
00:26:53 --> 00:26:56 And I have stuff from November that I haven't
00:26:56 --> 00:27:01 seen. So a lot of that is still sealed up. I'm
00:27:01 --> 00:27:03 trying to really hold myself back. I'm running
00:27:03 --> 00:27:06 out of space in my... I have no space. update
00:27:06 --> 00:27:09 that I have no space in my criterion shelf or
00:27:09 --> 00:27:13 in my boutique label side of the shelves so again
00:27:13 --> 00:27:16 I'm trying to really cut back on these sales
00:27:16 --> 00:27:18 but I'm gonna be keeping an eye out for any other
00:27:18 --> 00:27:21 recommendations that come from you guys so please
00:27:21 --> 00:27:23 let me know don't forget to follow me on Instagram
00:27:23 --> 00:27:27 at the physical cut pod or Carlos Ruben 2 .0
00:27:27 --> 00:27:31 that is K R L O Z R U B E N 2 .0 this has been
00:27:31 --> 00:27:34 the physical cut or films that be on the stream
00:27:34 --> 00:27:37 and I will see you guys next time. Thank you
00:27:37 --> 00:27:37 for listening.
